I got this in my mail this morning from Google alerts its from a kashmiri newspaper……
Mizo’s, as per the survey, are the heaviest smokers in India with 59.4 percent men and 22 percent women smokers in Mizoram followed by Meghalaya with 55 percent men and 6.7 percent women smokers. Kashmir and Haryana are the next in line with 40 percent men smokers. As per the survey in 1980, 40 percent of the Indian adult men and three percent women were smokers. But with anti-smoking campaigns gaining momentum and people becoming more health conscious, this ratio radically went down in 1999 with 29 percent men and 2.5 percent women smokers. The ratio could be even better today, the study says. The least smokers in the country are in Punjab (14 percent) and Maharashtra (13 percent).
According to the survey, the healthcare costs of the three major smoking-related diseases – cancer, coronary artery disease & chronic obstructive lung disease – are a whopping Rs 30, 800 crore a year. Eight lakh Indians, according to WHO, die in India every year because of smoking. These are more than all the deaths caused by AIDS, road mishaps, alcohol and drug abuses put together.
