In Jan 2000 , on the east bank of river Jordan, Riyad al-Ghweiri, a Jordanian archaeologist, uncovers a mosaic floor with Greek inscription
found at a church in the Jordan Valley. This site is believed to be the site where John the Baptist baptized Jesus about 2000 years ago.
This discovery brought Jordan in conflict with Israel who claims that Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist at Qasir al-Yahud, a West Bank area just north of the Dead Sea that is still under Israeli military control. The late Pope John Paul II also visited this site in March 2000
