Aizawl Nov 29: Ten personnel of the 2nd Indian Reserved police battalion currently deployed in Chhattisgarh died today from a landmine explosion which was tripped by the vehicle they were traveling in.Informing this paper about the incident, Adjutant Narayan from the battalion’s headquarters in Sukhma said the landmine victims were from two platoons stationed in Banda from E Company which has its headquarters in Konta in Dhantewada district, a Naxal-infested area of Chhattisgarh.

According to Narayan, the victims had gone to Konta from their station to purchase essential goods and were coming back towards Banda when the incident occurred.
“They were traveling in a civilian jeep while coming back and the landmine was tripped by the vehicle at around 2:15 pm this afternoon. The vehicle was totally pulverized while all the occupants died on the spot,” Narayan said adding that he did not know about the civilian casualties although it was certain the driver of the vehicle died in the explosion too.
He gave the names of the victims as Havildar T.K. Chalapan, Havildar Ralliantawna, constables Vanlalhruaia, Thangkhangen, Giano Chakma, Zaihmingthanga, R. Laltlanzova, Laltleipuia, Biakrotluanga and a IV grade Lalduhoma.
The incident occurred about 50 km from Sukhma and the commandant P.C. Lalchhuanawma and other personnel have gone to retrieve the body at the time of filing this report.
According to Narayan, the bodies would be taken to the Chhattisgarh capital Raipur, which is about 450 km from Sukhma, for post mortem examinations before they are brought home.
This is the first major casualty suffered by the 2nd Mizoram IR Battalion after it was deployed to Chhattisgarh about a year ago.
