Help Please!! I am using a Dell Inspirion Laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition. I have been recently getting the error message “Work offline or Try again”. I do not know which application is dialing the internet.
I am using Avast Professional which is regularly updated and also Spybot Search and Destroy and also Zone Alarm firewall. I have tried different solutions found on the net including registry edits. I am connected to the net through LAN and there is no Dial Up connection set up my laptop.
Anybody got a solution for this problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks Guys…..

I do see this ““Work offline or Try again” but only when I am really disconnected.
When you see this message, did you verify if you are connected to the Internet?

Does the message appear randomly, at startup or when you open IE?

I think you can try switching ‘automatic updates’ on all of your security agents i.e. Avast, Zone Alarm and Spybot Search & Destroy. If it does not work, uninstall the software you have installed recently, if it works, search for that software patch in the net, and if it doesn’t, you can try BitDefender anti-Rootkit to search what’s running undercover in your notebook; https://beta.bitdefender.com/login.php.
If it still does not work, you have to be more specific and detailed with the problem you face.

Since you are using LAN connection, you can also check your browser just in case-
Internet Option>connection tab>here, if you found any connection details in the ‘Dial-up & Virtual….’ box, click on ‘never dial a connection’ else you can remove all the content of that box.

While using LAN connection, the work offline message will appear when the connection has stop working, you have to reconnect or what u can do is go to tools and you will see work offline being ticked, that you have to untick and then thats it.

ZoRock- please note, as mentioned above, this message appears when the system which is running in the background tries to connect to the net. You would better switch off all the automatic updates. If it’s still not working, please provide screen shot for our refernce.

Download Process Explorer and run it when the message appears, maybe u can then figure it out which application is trying to dial to the internet…
Had this problem once. I scanned it with ad-aware and deleted everything that comes up…it solved my problem….you can give it a try?

ZoRock, will it be possible for you to reinstall windows, coz this is what I used to do when I have problems which I cannot solve in few hours. As it’s not a big deal to re-install. I hope it’s same with you. :))
