The only NIT(earlier REC) in North East is NITS at Silchar. Another NIT may come up but not in Mizoram.
NEW DELHI, Jan 29 : The Northeast is likely to have another National Institute of Technology, with the Central Government considering establishment of an institute in Manipur. Addressing the ongoing Social Editor’s Conference, HRD Ministry officials said a Central team after visiting the State has submitted its report last November. The report is under process currently, said the official.

In 2002, the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, decided to upgrade, in phases, all the original 17 Regional Engineering Colleges (RECs) as National Institutes of Technology (NITs), on the lines of the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
