A hat-trick from Sunil Chhetri inspired India to AFC Challenge Cup glory after the hosts overcame defending champions Tajikistan 4-1 in the final at Ambedkar Stadium.
Three goals in the opening 22 minutes swept Tajikistan away with Chhetri finding the back of the net either side of a Baichung Bhutia strike before the former completed his treble with 16 minutes remaining.

The AFC Challenge Cup is a national Football competition for emerging countries (those in the lowest (of three) categories as designed by the AFC president) that are members of the AFC. The first tournament was held in 2006 in Bangladesh. The 2008 and 2010 editions of the AFC Challenge Cup will serve as qualifiers for the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.

Kolkata: Now we can say Lalam Puia has come of age in this CFL. He is now the highest scorer in the CFL with seven goals.
After Baichung’s exit into the national camp, fans wondered who would replace the mighty boots of Baichung for the club in the CFL. It was left to this young Mizo striker, Lalam- a product of Tata Football Academy to shoulder the huge task of filling the breach created by Baichung’s absence.
No doubt, Puia has the talent to make it big, but to fill the void of India’s best striker was a big thing to ask from the young Mizo lad. However, Puia made his stance clear that he was good enough to fill Baichung’s empty space.
In the first outing of Mohun Bagan in the CFL, Puia struck into the hearts of the fans and his coach by scoring 2 goals against the Peerless. After that there was no looking back… he scored goals after goals to win matches for the mariners and also won a place in the heart of the Mohun Bagan fans. Especially after his two goals against the arch rival East Bengal-which won the match for the mariners, Puia has created himself a special place in the hearts of the fans.
It will now be seen how this young lad emerges under the guidance of Coach Karim Bencharifa who is known for moulding young players into better ones. No one can forget the way he took the young brigade of the Churchill brothers into the I-league. With Baichung Bhutia and Barreto in the team Puia can only grow better with age. Perhaps the nation will get another Baichung from Mohun Bagan in the form of Lalam Puia.
