Rev wanted God in Pledge of Allegiance dies at 97

The man who inspired Congress to add “under God” into the Pledge of Allegiance died on Thanksgiving Day. He was 97.

The Rev. George Docherty passed away in his central Pennsylvania home, said his wife Sue Docherty.

He first preached about the importance of acknowledging God in the pledge more than half a century ago at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church in Washington.
