Unseeded player Basil Khuma emerged winner in both the boys’ singles and the boys’ doubles event to bag a double crown in the Asian Under-14 Ranking Tennis Championships which came to a close at SDS Tennis Academy on Saturday.
First he shocked top seed Anvit Bendre 6-0, 6-2 in the boys’ singles final in style to win the top honours in the event. Later pairing with Dhruv Agarwal he outclassed the duo of Tushar Mandlekar and Rishab Agarwal 6-2, 6-3 in the boys’ doubles final to add the doubles crown also to his kitty.

Basil’s victory is a historic chapter for Mizo people. It will go a long way in our history for generations to come. It is my fondest dream that we will have more young people like Basil who give us reasons to be proud of our Mizo nation. I want to congratulate the couple who stands behind the scene for Basil, doing everything they can to make this boy shine brightly -Basil’s sister Dr.Rosy and her husband Pu B.Vanlalvawna IFS. Without them, I dont think Basil would not have gone this far. I wish we have more people who are willing to be in the shadow and let others shine like this couple – whether it be the church, politics, society, etc. Sometimes, I think all the Mizo people try to be in the lime light for every important feat of endeavour.
