“Laid to the river
Midsummer, I waved
A V of black swans
On with hope to the graveAnd through Red September
With skies fire-paved
I begged you appear
Like a thorn from the holy ones

She is saying that her lover has died and was laid to rest by the river in the midst of the summer months. Black swans represent bitterness and sorrow and Red September is a fiery pain she cannot be rid of. She went to his grave and begged him to return to her despite the fact that their relationship was filled with pain and the pain is sure to come again if the angels allow him to live again.

Cold was my soul
Untold was the pain
I faced when you left me
A rose in the rain…
So I swore to the razor
That never, enchained
Would your dark nails of faith
Be pushed through my veins again

This is the male lover speaking. He is explaining how miserable he was when she went away from him and it felt like something wonderful and amazing had been tossed out in the rain carelessly [Perhaps suggesting that she did not find their love to be as beautiful and worthwhile as he]. So when the hurt became too great, he slit his wrist and escaped a life of loneliness that he otherwise would have been bound to. He will no longer be made to deal with her memory.

Bared on your tomb
I’m a prayer for your loneliness
And would you ever soon
Come above on to me?
For once upon a time
From the binds of your loneliness
I could always find the right slot for your sacred key

This is the female again. When I listen to this part, I envision her lying on top of a white marble tomb and murmuring prayers of forgiveness for leaving him as she did. She is pleading with him to return to the land of the living to be with her and remembering the way they once could make each other so happy just by being together and how it seemed so sacredly special.

Six feet deep is the incision
In my heart, that barless prison
Discoulours all with tunnel vision
Sunsetter…
Nymphetamine
Sick and weak from my condition
This lust, this vampyric addiction
To Her alone in full submission
None better…
Mymphetamine
Nymphetamine, Nymphetamine…
Nymphetamine girl.
Nymphetamine, Nymphetamine…
My Nymphetamine girl.
Wicked with your charm
I’m circled like prey
Back in the forest
Where whispers persuade
More sugar trails
My white lady laid
Than pillars of salt…

He is describing the deep affect she had on him and the painful emotional wound of her leaving him. His heart feels like a prison because he is trapped in his overwhelming feelings for her but can do nothing to free himself. It is here that she is first referred to as “Nymphetamine”. He goes on to say how heartbroken he is and how his lust for her is consuming him like a vampire’s addiction to blood. She was the only one who he would willingly submit to, the only one he loved and the only one who ever did and ever would hold his heart. There is no one in the world better than she and he again calls her Nymphetamine. This word means that she is so beautiful [Nymph] and he has an overpowering attraction to her [Phetamine].He then speaks of her charming ways that ensnared him and surrounded him like perhaps a hawk circling over its prey. The next few lines seem to suggest her irresistible persuasive body and personality and “suggar trails” is like sweetness that misleads him to a place of dark unhappiness in the end. “White lady laid” strikes me as meaning either his virgin lover and he had sexual intercourse or possibly she died. “Pillars of salt” is from the Bible when a man’s wife refused to leave Sodom and was turned to a pillar of salt. This may mean that she turned out to be someone deceiving or vile in some way so in his mind she became salt instead of sugar since she would not abandon her ways.

Fold to my arms
Hold their message away
And dance out to the moon
As we did in those golden days

She is recalling the way they spent so many nights together, dancing beneath the moon and holding each other close.

Christening stars
I remember the way
We were needle and spoon
Mislaid in the burning hay

He is recalling more memories of nighttime happenings and beautiful moments when they were together. He describes the way they were two opposites–her a sharp needle that pricks the finger yet fixes the tears and him a harmless innocent spoon, dull and unthreatening–and lying side by side in an unexpected mismatched wave of heated passion.

That’s what I think. Basically, a love song in which the deceased lover and the living lover share their feelings towards one another and how they’ve handled all that has happened. So wonderful… Wanna play it at my wedding.”
