The government on Wednesday banned bulk SMSes and MMSes for three days leading to the Ayodhya verdict on September 24 in an unprecedented move aimed at preventing cellphones turning handy for mischief-mongers looking to spread rumours, distribute objectionable content and create panic. The communications ministry’s late-night communiqué to mobile phone companies is another attempt by the government to keep a tight lid on untoward incidents on Friday, when the Allahabad High Court is due to rule on whether Hindus or Muslims own land around the demolished mosque.

BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court stays Ayodhya verdict by one week
The Supreme Court has deferred the Ayodhya verdict by one week. The Supreme Court will hear the Ayodhya matter on September 28. The apex court said the deferrment is in public interest
The petition filed by retired bureaucrat Ramesh Chand Tripathi had asked for the verdict to be deferred to allow mediation to find a solution to the contentious dispute.
