A Mizo teenager was gangraped by a group of Class X and XII students, among them sons of three policemen, hours after a woman suspected to be involved in trafficking handed the girl over to them.
The incident, which took place in this Assam town on Thursday evening but came to light on Saturday, comes just a few days after a BPO employee from Mizoram was gangraped in Delhi on a moving vehicle and dumped. While the Delhi rapists are now behind bars, three of the students accused of the Silchar rape are still at large. Police have so far arrested eight persons. Police came to know about the incident after the liaison officer of Mizoram House lodged a complaint.
Malsuam Thanga (32), a Mizo woman, was arrested for allegedly handing over the 19-year-old victim, a resident of Champai in Mizoram, to the group of students.
A suspected trafficker handed over a 19-year-old Mizo girl to a group of 10 students in Silchar, who took turns raping her at a friend’s rented house on Meherab Ali Lane in the Chamragodam area of Silchar on Thursday night. On Friday morning, when they left, the victim reported the incident to the Mizoram House liaison officer, who lodged a police complaint.
Silchar police station officer-in-charge Shyam Kumar Chauhan said on Saturday a hunt was on for the other accused. The eight arrested, including Thanga, have been sent to judicial custody. The victim was handed over to Mizoram police after medical tests.

The woman told the police she had run out of cash and sought the help of another Mizo woman acquaintance, Malsawami, who is married to a Silchar resident.
According to the victim’s account, on Thursday night, Malsawami’s husband escorted her to a house in Madhurband, a riverfront locality in Silchar where one of the accused, Shubhadip Dutta, has a one-room accommodation. Shubhadip also agreed to lend the woman Rs 1,000.
Police sources said Shubhadip rang up nine of his friends and invited them to the house later in the evening.
The woman alleged that initially the hours wore by in chit-chat but at night, the 10 boys raped her one by one.
The police, quoting the victim, said in the morning the woman asked for the money Shubhadip had promised, but he shooed her away.
On Friday morning, the woman filed a complaint at Mizoram House in Silchar. Champhai district in Mizoram borders Assam.

The alleged rape incident was only part of the story. The victim was said to be trafficked from Champhai. Human trafficking is not much less of serious crime than rape. If she knowingly follows “Malsuam Thanga” the alleged trafficker, she was playig a very dangerous game. Trafficked women are often raped. Even if she was not raped by the students, she was bound to be raped later, many times over. So, what led the girl to involve in such a plan, should be the first question. The economy if Mizoram is not that bad for women to be lured away by traffickers.
