A rope, a chair and a beam.

(Magazine pakhatah chuan a chhuak tawh tho a, mahse hetah kher kher hian ka rawn post ve chak a, a pawi em lovang chu maw…chuan saptawng intih thiam vel vang a ni lo bawk :-P)

She was standing on the balcony of her boyfriend’s apartment, looking down on the street hustling with taffic, vendors and commuters, all minding their own business. The balcony had this great view of a city crowded with people, and with buildings crammed in each and every nook and corner, but she didn’t notice any of these. All that she saw was a rope, a chair and a beam on the ceiling from where to hang herself.

She came to Delhi to pursue her dream of going to one of the best colleges in India. She was a very timid girl, with eyes that bring out the innocence of a girl not yet defiled by the lusts of men and she was, at first, a bit intimidated by the sights and sounds of the capital city and a possible threat lurking around the corners of its infested alley-ways. Though she was very shy and diffident by nature, there was something about her that pierced the very core of every man that had ever laid eyes on her.

She was a beauty and to everyone it was her body that defined her, and not her character. Everyone who knew her could tell tales of her heavenly body yet no one could say a word of who she really was inside. She was the girl who every other girl wanted to be and all the boys wanted to be with. She had legs that seem to soar to the heavens, carrying her around with a stride so elegant that she walked like a feather being gently blown by the wind. She had an ample bosom and a cleavage that seemed to run down to the very depths of her soul. Away from the cluthches of her parent’s boundaries she began to immerse herself in the attention and glory that her lustful body brought her.

Then along came a guy who was unlike any other she had met before, he was almost like an illusion of the perfect guy. He was different than the rest, he didn’t just stopped and stared, he listened; he didn’t just cared for her, he gave her all his attention when she wanted it but backed off a bit when she needed space. He would crack a joke or two every now and then, he was well read enough to talk about almost everything under the sun, and had a slight touch of a feminine side that appreciated the beauty of the world and would even engage himself in gossip with her for hours at a time. Above all, he had the looks that made her want to tear of his clothes and feel his rough manly body in an amorous manner whenever she was with him.

She fell for the man who treated her like a princess and gave her everything she ever wanted. She fell in love with him and after all the nights they were alone, she could no longer contain her body’s desires and gave herself away to be swept in love’s ultimate act.  A year on in their relationship she no longer stayed in her PG though she paid the bills. She woke up every morning beside the man whom she loved knowing that the night before was magical and ou of this world. She no longer cared for what others think of her, no longer cared for her studies; all she cared for was pleasing the man who gave her feelings which no other man had given her before. She let herself be blinded of the truth that they were living in sin, because, for her, what they did weren’t just acts of lust but of love, not of desire but of passion and hope.

All this changed when a phone call from the doctor’s office came, telling her that she was no longer alone,  a new life was growing inside of her. She was elated to hear the news because their act of love was giving them a child and as soon as she dropped the phone, tears of joy came rolling down her dimpled face. She could not wait to tell him the news but when she did all her dreams of raising a child, brought forth to this world out of love and passion, came crashing down upon her as she and her lover had different opinions about their future. He wasn’t ready to be a dad, he wasn’t ready to raise a family; he wanted an abortion and for him there was just no other way.

It was then that she realised that she was living a dream. It was then that she was pulled down to the harsh reality of living in sin. She could not grasp hold of the reality she was facing and there were times when her thoughts carried her to paths not filled with roses but with thorns, a path of excruciating pain, and a path hell bound. All she could think about was how this lover of hers was willing to remove his own flesh and blood from the very face of this world without giving a moment’s thought. However she knew that she had to do what he wanted, she had to become a murderer not to loose him because she had already given herself to him; she had given him her mind her body her essence and her soul to him, and loosing him meant loosing herself.

For the first time in her existence she did not have the tiniest clue about how to tread onwards with her life. Her life was now an unending twist and turn of agony as she had betrayed her parent’s trust, deviated from the path of her religion’s teachings and had strayed away from God. Perhaps, the greatest pain for her was that despite all the pain and suffering she was going through she still could not leave him, he was still the man who had given her endless pleasures she could never forget.

However, her pain and sorrow were too much to bear by herself. She had no one to turn to, not her parents whom she had deceived beyond contemplation, not her friends whom she had all forsaken to be by his side, and not even God whom she thought would forsake her after she had been living in sin for so long. All she had beside her was him, and he had a cold-blooded murderer living inside of him. She had become an animal, only listening to the call of the pleasures of her amorous acivities, an animal which could not choose between the life growing inside of her or her lover.  The thought that she was willing to become a murderer for a man made her feel that she no longer deserved to be a part of this world and she had not the will to live anymore.

One evening, she was standing alone on the balcony of her boyfriend’s apartment, looking down on the street hustling with taffic, vendors and commuters, all minding their own businesses. The balcony had this great view of a city crowded with people, and with buildings crammed in each and every nook and corner, but she didn’t notice any of these. All that she saw was a rope, a chair and a beam on the ceiling from where to hang herself. She left a note asking for forgiveness, took the rope, climbed the chair and tied one end of the rope on the beam and made a noose on the other end which she put down her neck. She gulped down her last breath of air, their last breath of air, took one last look at her note, reflected on the lives she was going to destroy, hers and her child; and slowly stepped down from the chair, with the noose still clinging round her neck and slowly gripping her life towards a bitter end.

    FUNNY LETTER

A friend of mine, a single mother of one, was passing by her daughter’s bedroom when she saw, to her shock, the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was addressed, “Mom.” With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

“Dear Mom: It is with great regret and sorrow that I’m writing you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I’ve been finding real passion with Ahmed and he is so nice-even with all his piercings, tattoos, beard, and his motorcycle clothes.

“But it’s not only the passion Mom, I’m pregnant and Ahmed said that we will be very happy. He already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. He wants to have many more children with me and that’s now one of my dreams too.

Ahmed taught me that marijuana doesn’t really hurt anyone and we’ll be growing it for us and trading it with his friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we’ll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Ahmed can get better; he sure deserves it!! Don’t worry Mom, I’m 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I’m sure we’ll be back to visit so you can get to know your grand children.

    Your daughter, Judith

PS: Mom, none of the above is true. I’m over at the neighbor’s house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than my report card that’s in my desk center drawer. I love you! Call when it is safe for me to come home.
