Agony to ecstacy: Author overcomes challenges

Zodin Sanga, Aizawl (Sept 1): The dust jackets on 30-year-old Mafeli’s bookshelf prove that words may not heal physical pain, but certainly have the power to give incomparable courage to a wheelchair-bound writer to build a paradise of her own in the world of books. This differently-abled writer has achieved what is impossible for many with no physical disability as she has just completed her fourth novel, six years after her debut novel hit the shelves.

“It’s a love story set against the backdrop of insurgency in Mizoram, the darkest days in our history,” Mafeli says, giving a brief introduction to her new novel Nghilhar Kan Tuar. For Mafeli, writing is not just a hobby, but an escape from the cruel reality of life. “I may have lost a paradise due to my inability to move around, but I have found a much better and nicer paradise in a world that I build in my novels. For, real life is cruel,” the author says.

Six years ago, Mafeli started working on her first novel Confession on a manual typewriter by hitting the keyboards with a pen as the old Remington was not friendly enough for her maimed fingers. But she managed to finish the 202-page book in just 26 days. The novel was sold out to the extent that there is not a single copy left for the author, something that has forced her to plan a reprint.

However, by the time Mafeli sat to begin her second novel Bawih she was gifted a computer by a generous government official who was touched by her story. “The sensitive computer keyboard is friendly to my fingers compared to the old typewriter. Although I had to face some technical difficulties writing my second novel, I overcame all that by the time I started working on my third novel Agony,” she says. Surprisingly, Mafeli has acquired computer knowledge to such an extent that she had herself designed the covers of her last two books.

Mafeli was afflicted by a bone and joint disorder following “wrong” treatment administered to her after she fell from a chair on her second birthday. “On her second birthday, her older siblings seated her upon a chair from which she fell. She developed pain in her legs. Though she was put on medication, Mafeli still complained of pain in all the bone joints and soon was rendered crippled,” her mother Lalvuani recalls. Her friends and family believe her present condition is a result of wrong treatment.

Till date, Mafeli’s affliction continues to baffle doctors who say they could find nothing wrong with her. However, all her limbs are stunted as a result of which she cannot walk or hold anything properly in her hand. But Mafeli never let her physical pain become a hurdle in realising her dreams. Although she did her limited schooling at the Special School established by the Spastic Society of Mizoram in Aizawl, her love for writing continues.

“I was able to read and write even before I attended school, though I cannot recall how I learnt. In special school, my first class was Class II. The teachers there prmoted me to Class IV the next year. The next year, I was promoted to Class VII, but couldn’t sit for the exams because of my illness,” Mafeli recollects her school days. She suffered from frequent nose-bleeds and it was this ailment that prevented her from sitting for Class VII exams. Until a few years ago, Mafeli had to be given blood from time to time because of regular loss of blood, which fortunately has stopped now.
