Google and Univ. of California sign contract to digitize books

August 10th, 2006 3:38 pm by BlackWhite

Hehe, this one slipped my radar. I don’t have anything against google, but I think Google is really stupid to make this move. In case you didn’t know, this is pure copyright infringement and google is playing a very dangerous game. And I don’t think these are just backup copies of the books they are planning to scan/digitize.

Google will be scanning and digitizing millions of books from the University of California’s more than 100 libraries across its 10 campuses and making those titles fully searchable, Adam M. Smith, group product manager on Google Book Search, said Tuesday.

There are books which are no longer protected by “Copyright”.

Books are always copyrighted by the publishers.
BTW, I guess all reading media will be digitized and we won’t have any libraries to go to. :(

. The full text of books in the public domain will be available through Google Book Search, while only snippets of copyrighted books will be viewable, along with information about where they can be bought or borrowed.

yes benzamin is right… only the books which are no longer under copyright will be fully scanned….

I’m looking for a digital version of William Diehl’s Primal Fear. A friend of mine has it in paperback but with the first ten pages missing…..she says they once went for a walk and never came back.

Or anyone wants to type out the first ten pages for me here huh?
