Lost city of Chernobyl

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

Stumbled upon this site. Some real sad pictures of the nuclear disaster that happened in Chernobyl.

On the 26th of April 1986 shortly after midnight, to be precise, at 1:23 GMT, there occurred near the Ukrainian town of Chornobyl a tremendous explosion at a huge nuclear power plant, followed by a gradual meltdown of the reactor No. 4.

It was by far the worst nuclear reactor accident ever, which immediately sent a radioactive cloud across neighbouring Byelorussia, Poland and the Baltic Republics towards Scandinavia.

Till now the land is abandoned, thousands of houses, thousands acres of the land, everything is now stays almost the same as it was 20 years ago.

This Soviet Era sign indicates the entrance to Chernobyl county. Many of the things there stand unchanged since Soviet union times.

It is the monument to the people who tried to shut down the nuclear station right after the accident happened. Many of the died – some same year (1986) others a little bit later.

How Programmers at Microsoft comment

Tuesday, September 26th, 2006

At first, I found this hilarious but when you think of it as a programmer, you can see the frustration that arises while coding, esp when things go wrong. Some comments by programmers at Microsoft (of the leaked Windows 2000 code). Old news, but still… :)

* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* !!!!!!!IF YOU CHANGE TABS TO SPACES, YOU WILL BE KILLED!!!!!!!
* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!DOING SO FUCKS THE BUILD PROCESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
* !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

private\inet\mshtml\src\site\layout\flowlyt.cxx:
// God, I hate this hack …

private\ntos\w32\ntuser\client\nt6\user.h:
* The magnitude of this hack compares favorably with that of the national debt. LOL

While surprisingly informal, there are limits to how far the programmers go. There are no derogatory references to Microsoft or Windows themselves. Bill Gates is never mentioned. There are no racist or homophobic slurs. I saw only one drug reference.

private\shell\ext\tweakui\genthunk.c:
* CallProc32W is insane. It’s a variadic function that uses
* the pascal calling convention. (It probably makes more sense
* when you’re stoned.
)

In short, there is nothing really surprising in this leak. Microsoft does not steal open-source code. Their older code is flaky, their modern code excellent. Their programmers are skilled and enthusiastic. Problems are generally due to a trade-off of current quality against vast hardware, software and backward compatibility.

Archie Comics

Monday, September 25th, 2006

im sure every normal (urban?) teenager would have read Archie Comics when they were kids/teenagers..

The best thing to do when you had nothing else to do was to curl up in bed and pick up an Archie Double Digest and read about the wacky adventures of Archie.betty,Veronica,Reggie,Moose Jughead etc..

Ive lost count of the number of Archie digests that ive read.. Jughead Jones is my fav character cuz he so laid back and likes to eat eat and eat (kinda like me)

and who can forget the eternal love triangle that is Archie/Veronica/Betty.. im sure all of us liked Betty the most!

nowadays i hardly read Archie although if go to someone’s house and see an Archie mag lying around i alwys pick it up and read it…

the content and stories in the Archie comix would usually match the season they were published in.. so if it was summer we would see lots of stories involving the beach etc.. used to love these issues.. Betty and Veronica were the first swimsuit models i adored… =)

EDIT: and of course the Archie comics sometimes had L’il Jil/Sabrina/Josie and the Pussycats thrown in occasionally….

I should have preserved all the old Archie comics for my kids to read… now i will have to go to some must old bookstore or library to hunt for them.. (which is actuallly something i love.. hunting around for books in 5 foot high shelves in some tiny bookstore smelling of centuries old paper =).. those who have been there will know what i mean…)

here is the official Archie site

and the on one Wikipedia

PS: thanks to J who’s comment ‘inspired’ me to write this topic.. harrumph...

Classical’s Class and Rap’s Bad Rap

Monday, September 25th, 2006

Hmmm, so stupid people like rap! :D

As stereotypes might suggest, those with the most education were also the main fans of opera, classical music, and jazz. For example, 8.5% of the classical music lovers had Ph.D.s, compared with 1.4% of those who favored disco music. And classical music lovers’ incomes averaged $66,000 compared to $44,000 for lovers of popular dance music. Classical music buffs were also inclined toward intellectual fare, such as current-affairs magazines, whereas the rap/pop crowd favored magazines about cars, women, or celebrities.

One “clear pattern” to emerge was a clustering of antisocial tendencies among young fans of pop, rap, and rock. For example, 53% of hip-hop fans admitted to having committed a criminal act, compared to 18% of fans of musicals. (Not all survey results conformed easily to stereotypes: Opera buffs were least likely to take showers and wash their hair, for example, whereas fans of “DJ-based music” were frequent shampooers.) The findings are described in three papers in press in the journal Psychology of Music.

Nothing interesting

Monday, September 25th, 2006

This morning, I have been visiting various Mizo sites searching for any interesting story that I can bring and link. Truth is “There’s Nothing”. Seminar on “Laldenga’s Judgement” come close. Bon Voyage to 20 PAMRA members on India Tour “Bharat Darshan”. There seem to be more people these days who comment Newslink news in the English daily’s own site newslink.in, the website does appear pretty plain since a couple of days. An attempt to learn whats going on via email (newslink@indiatimes.com) never earn any replies though. The heated debate drawn by Sandman’s “Mizo Names” at zawlbuk.net seems the most interesting. Amit too did nothing on Sunday. Hmmm, it was Bw’s Google and the founder’s underwear everywhere. Now it’s Sandman. I am tired of Sandman :-)

I wasn’t keeping very well since Sat night. I feel better now. Eat well and keep well throughtout the week. Remember to drink lots of water.

Osama in the bin?

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

If a French newspaper ‘L’Est Republicain’ is to be believed, Osama bin Laden has died of Typhoid in Pakistan. So did Salmonella typhii do what George Bush and his army of destruction couldn’t do? Anyhow, if the story turn out to be true, I think the joke is definitely on Mr. Bush.

Deng eats Dong

Sunday, September 24th, 2006

Different strokes for different folks. We probably all know through our Geography classes in school and via Discovery channel that different cultures have different customs and traditions as well as very different eating habits. And most Net-savvy people and regular emailers have been led to believe that the Chinese and many easterners enjoy delicacies that are quite unusual. Case in point, the embryo and baby-eating pictures that floated around the Net a couple of years ago which were later claimed by some to be photoshopped fakes. But according to the BBC there’s a unique restaurant in Beijing that serves a very different kind of menu…animal appendages or to put it plainly, animal penises. Apparently they are low in cholesterol and good, not just for boosting the male sex drive, but also for treating all sorts of ailments… :o

It gets yummier here
