Hey Ben,
My washing machine decided to stall today and my appartment is flooded….While the plumber is working, I managed to write the below… – Shahnaz Kimi

:-)

I spent 16 years of my life in Mizoram. In those years, I was like any other young girl with big dreams and cared a little about my home state; I took the beauty, climate of the place, the sweet water, the generosity and friendliness of the people for granted.

I welcomed the change that was happening in Mizoram, I thought it was for the good of the people- but then it became so rapid that I have lost track of what the change is all about. I come home every year and is alarming to see the pace of change and the impact on the lives of the Mizos.

While I cannot hinder it, I thought I could at least help the future generation (s) by writing a book accompanied by photo journal so that they would be able to refer to later in their lives.

Therefore, I embarked on a journey to record the lives of the present Mizos and Mizoram. When I was in Aizawl this January, and told my friends about my plans to travel to the ‘Deep South of Mizoram’, spending time with the Lais, Maras, Matus, Chakmas and Riangs, they thought I was mad because it is too far from Aizawl!

I have written a brief journal on my travel dated 23rd of February, and linked to a photo gallery called In Mizoram 2006 -2007. Besides my travel journal, I have also started adding other articles and will be updated periodically as I have time.

I hope that this journal will inspire every Mizo to travel in their home state and discover the beauty of the place and the people. There are fantastic tourist lodges and it is easier to travel in Mizoram than in many other states I have been to in India.

Mizoram is bigger than it looks on the map, take your time to walk and learn about our people. You will be amazed how delightful and enriching it is to share tea with villagers in tea stalls or their homes. And do not forget to give lifts to the people who are hitch hiking on the motor roads, they will be able to tell you about more about the history of the village s than any books would.
