Sandman on Christian dress code

March 29th, 2007 2:08 pm by TheHumanBot

Sandman on his latest blog post asks “As a responsible Mizo adult settling outside Mizoram, are we all doing enough about the dress codes at our Mizo Church services ?“. It’s lengthy as usual and there already are a number of interesting comments, including several from me. He even suggests asking people with improper dress code to leave the Church.

We need to walk up to such people and tell them frankly but politely, face to face, that such dress codes will not be tolerated and that maybe they might be better off not coming to Church at all if they are going to continue dressing up that way… Sometimes it might even be proper to ask such people to leave the Church premises right in the middle of the service infront of everyone… the embarrassment will not only assure them of ever repeating that again but will also make others think twice before putting on that skimpy outfit. Do we have the guts to tell them that? Or are we going to spend the rest of our lives bitching about that particular person “eeee kha nu kha maw? BiakInah a rawn in chei hot thei rapssss” without anyone ever actually telling the person that he/she is out of place?

Btw, there’s a rumour that Sandman will be replacing C.V John as the Director (or whatever) of New Life Ministry :-)

each man to his own motivations to come to church.

but seriously.. i agree wid u in saying that there has to be a limit on how we dress to church.. all the naughty bits shd be cleanly covered up :)
but of course what matters is whats inside but in our society we also have to be careful in what we wear say and do.

And if that pisses them off to the extent that they give church a miss, so be it. Church is not the place to doll up and look like little tart queens. Obviously, with the heat in the plains you can’t expect them to dress in puans and the like but lay some ground rules…like come to church in passably decent wear because this is holy ground you’re entering etc etc.

    – Exactly! Church Service in Mizoram is purely Church service. Else where, its more than that. It’s a way to socialize and meet people from the community.

In Chennai, it’s a “welfare activity”.

Besides the socializing and meeting people, you get to hear the word of God too.

If someone shows up, sleeve or sleeveless, I welcome it.

But seriously speaking, I went to church 2 weeks ago in jeans – not because of anything else, but because my formal pants weren’t dry yet.

There could be others in the same situation too, or even some too poor to afford formal clothes and dressed in what others could say ‘improper dress’.

Sandman, hope you’re reading this and understand that the world is not defined so easily in black and white terms.

Personally I think jeans are decent sunday wear for men, as long as they don’t make too much of a fashion statement, as in being torn or ripped out all over or are too baggy or too over the top in one way or the other.

I don’t think you can compare work place and church. You go to work to make money. You have no choice but to follow the rules. When it comes Church, you can’t have rules like you do at School and office. It should come from the “heart” and not because it’s the rule.

It’s more important to win their heart before commanding people to follow a certain dress code.

If one is really concerned and wants to bring about a change, would you act and depend on your own ideas and opinions?

Would you rather sincerely seek guidance from the Lord and pray ” Lord, people coming to Church in fancy dresses’s really bordering and I want to do something about it. However, I need your help on how to best fix this. I could be doing the wrong thing for the right cause. There’s nothing I can do without you. Show me the way. Led me be your instrument to bring about this change. ”

    Would you?

Mumbai lamah poh an lo sawi ve chiah nih hi :)

MUMBAI: After the Mumbai University vice chancellor’s pronouncements on student attire, make way for another dress code.

Upset at the casual style of dressing that many Catholics opt for even at religious functions, the Archbishop of Mumbai, Cardinal Ivan Dias, has issued a dress code that might just bring back the old formal style of dressing for Sunday mass.

But get this right: the cardinal isn’t insisting on things like the lacy veils that women once wore to cover their heads before entering the house of God (a tradition which continues in many Goa churches).

What he IS calling for is a greater sense of decorum in dress, one that has been gradually breaking down over the years.

For example, even jeans at one time were frowned on as being not respectful enough, but youngsters today troop in in T-shirts, shorts, mini skirts and spaghetti straps.

Details of the code have been communicated to Catholics from the pulpit at Sunday Mass as well as through Catholic journals.

The code says, “Whereas in days gone by, the ‘Sunday Best’ used to become at times a sort of fashion parade, the modern tendency would seem to go to the other extreme, with people wearing attire which is considered casual and unbecoming of the sacred dignity of the church and the members of its congregation.”

The Cardinal states, “The dress code and behaviour patterns in the church require our special attention.

One cannot ignore the critical remarks being made by many, even by those of other faiths, with regard to the attire used by some persons, men and women, when they worship in church.”

Another occasion at which dress has become an issue is during wedding vows, with brides sometimes choosing an off-shoulder gown which doesn’t find favour with the officiating priest.

Matrimony is one of the sacraments and should be treated with a certain sanctity, feel priests. The issue of sartorial sobriety has come up not only in Mumbai but in Pune as well.
