My Knowledge About RAM

Wanted to share some of my knowledges about Random Access Memory, which we called RAM. I’m not going to write about the functions and performance of RAM. Just a brief discussion on different types and when they are used.

We usually call the whole component in the picture a RAM. However, here comes the fact. The picture which you are seeing is called Memory Module, in which RAM or DIP (Dual Inline Package) chips are installed (The black component of Memory Module).

To my knowledge, there are 8 types of RAM:
`
1. SRAM – Static RAM: The speed of SRAM is 10 nano secs. Since the speed is the highest among RAMs, it is used in Catche memory in the CPU or Processor.

2. DRAM – Dynamic RAM: The speed is 90 nano secs. It is used in Memory Module.

3. EDORAM – Extended Data Out RAM : Speed 60 nano secs, used in Memory Module.

4. SDRAM – Synchronous Dynamic Ram : Speed of 30 nano secs or 100 – 266 Mhz. Used in Memory Module.

5. DDRRAM – Double Data Rate RAM: Speed of 330 – 500 Mhz. 500 Mhz has been found in DDR2, which is the latest version of DDR. They are also used in Memory Module.

6. RDRAM – Rambus Dynamic RAM : Speed of 800 Mhz, used in Memory Module. Since RDRAM is copyrighted, they cannot be manufactured by other companies except Rambus. As a result, they are very expensive.

7. VRAM – Video RAM: Which we normally called video card. Used in display adapters.

8. WRAM – Window RAM: Same as above, but better than VRAM since DPT (Dual Ported Technology) is implemented in WRAM.

Just like we have different types of RAM, we also have different types of Memory Modules:

1. SIMM – Single Inline Memory Module: There are 2 types, 30 pins and 72 pins. The Buswidth in 30 pins is 16 bits whereas it’s 32 in 72 pins. This means 30 pins can send 2 bytes of date at a time whereas 72 pins can send 4 bytes. The same applies to all types of Memory Module.

They can either have EDORAM or DRAM. The function of the opposing pins are the same in SIMM, whereas opposing pins perform different functions in all the other Memory Modules.

2. DIMM – Dual Inline Memory Module: 3 types here. 168 pins, 184 pins and 240 pins. All have a buswidth of 64 bits. 168 pins have SDRAM, 184 pins have DDR and 240 has DDR2.

3. RIMM – Rambus Inline Memory Module: There is only 1 type, which is 184 pins. Can be used only with RDRAM since this is copyrighted. It has a buswidth of 16 bits. When you are going run a 64 bit processor, you will need 4 RIMMs since the buswidth of RIMM is only 16 bits (16 X 4 = 64). Since they are so expensive, an alternate option has been introduced which is replacing the 3 RIMMs by 3 CRIMMs(Continuity Rambus Inline Memory Module). CRIMM is a blank Memory Module without a DIP chip or RAM. In short, to run 64 bit processor using RIMM, we need 1 RIMM and 3 CRIMMs(1 RDRAM with RIMM and another 3 blank memory modules, which we called CRIMM) so that the buswidth of the memory meets the processor requirement. This comes under Memory Bank. Including RIMM, all the above Memory Modules work in Desktop Computer.

4. SODIMM – Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module:There are 2 types. 72 pins which has a buswidth of 32 bits and 144 pins which has a buswidth of 64 bits. The size is half the size of DIMM and they are used only in Laptops. It can either has SDRAM or DDR.

5. MICRODIMM: Micro DIMM are used in PDA (Personal Digital assistance). Pin of the memory module can vary from one manufacturer to another.

So, to my knowledge, DIMM is the most popular Memody Module used these days. I’ll try to update this as much as possible. Well, let me stop here for now coz I think I am running outta space here. Hehe.

Thanks for reading.

And a new type of RAM called MRAM-MagneticRAM is being tested right now in some countries…MRAM hian a thil tih theih advntg ber chu…i program hman lar ber2 ho kha a in save reng thei a PC off pawn…main memory trang fatch zel ngai tawh lo in…so with dis RAM ur PC will work faster and power cut wont effect much on ur RAM condition…
