Chhanga pinged me over GMail web chat, a month or two ago. “Super converter – Converts anything”, he said. I have in the past tried applications (all in vain) to convert videos from one media format to another. Most of the time – to reduce the size. Super converter is a blessing to me. It serves my need. It’s also free.
1) Run the application
2) Drag the source file into the application (there’s a box at the bottom)
3) Select the output container. My favorite is mp4. Small size and hardly any loss of quality that I can notice
4) Select Output Video Codec. Just leaving the default will work, if you don’t know it is. You may also leave the audio codec as it is.
5) There are many settings under video and audio. I am not the multimedia geek. I do not play around. I leave it as it is.
6) Hit Encode (Active Files) to start the conversion.
7) Once the process is over, I find the encoded (converted) file in the root directory of C drive commonly known as “C Colon”

Spikey, what is the difference between “output container” and codec?
I googled and found –
A container format is a computer file format that can contain various types of data, compressed by means of standardized audio/video codecs.
Codec (enCOder/DECoder or COmpressor/DECompressor): software (or hardware) that compresses and decompresses audio and video data streams.
The purpose of codecs is to reduce the size of digital audio samples and video frames in order to speed up transmission and save storage space.
This explained my doubt why some AVI files are huge and some are not. AVI is not a codec but a container format.
Super Converter not only helped me convert video file but also made me learn what the difference between container format and codec.
