Aizawl July 29: Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs minister K. Sangthuama who paid a one-day visit to Vairengte village yesterday urged the people to remain peaceful and refrain from activities that could stop supplies coming to the state.
In a meeting held at the village’s community hall attended by representatives of the village councils, NGOs and government departments, Sangthuama said while he was sorry for the incident in Dholai where a man from the village had lost his life and another had needed to be hospitalized, the aftermath of the incident had caused great difficulties for the people of the state in terms of essential commodities and that the people should refrain from further activities that could cut the supply line to state that is now returning to normal.
The minister informed the gathering that the state government is taking steps to see that the demands given to the Assam government by Vairengte for compensations are honoured by the Assam government and that the people should show patience and await for developments.
The people of Vairengte in a meeting held on Thursday night had decided to give until August 14, 2007 for the government to react to their demand following an appeal from the SDO (Civil) not to impose an indefinite road block to meet their demand.
The Silchar Truck Drivers Association took the opportunity of the minister’s visit to Vairengte to meet him to impress on him the difficulties they have inside Mizoram. Conducting the meeting at the SDO office, he was informed that when incidents like the one in Dholai take place, drivers face great difficulties because they become target of public anger despite the fact that drivers are not involved at all. They stressed the need for the Mizo people to recognize what is communal and what is not and not make everything into a communal issue when something happens between Mizos and non-Mizos.
Another problem was the demand of money from the many check gates in Vairengte which causes great hardships for the drivers.
