Aizawl Aug 27: If what a report in a local vernacular daily today is true, cellular telephones are the culprit in the increase of ‘call-girls’ in the state capital.
Tawrh Bawm today said amateur prostitutes are increasingly abounding in Aizawl who are looking to make quick money from selling their bodies to acquire mobile phones or to top up or recharge their connections. And taxi drivers are the best conduit for contact between these amateur call girls and male customers.
Narrating a taxi driver’s story, the paper said two seemingly innocent and young girls had recently asked the cabbie to find them male customers and when he asked them why they were doing this thing, he was told that they wanted to own mobile phones like the rest of their friends.
According to the paper, these girls are mostly students and working girls from the rural areas staying in hostels or rented accommodations in the state capital. They charge their customers between Rs 1000 to Rs 2500 for a single night and do not consider themselves as prostitutes.
These girls usually give their mobile phone numbers to taxi drivers who are the main people approached by potential customers in need of the services of such girls. A few of these drivers have more than one mobile number meaning they can contact a number of girls if one girl is not available. The paper, however, warned that not all taxi drivers know these girls and that some of them are absolutely against being a conduit.
While some of these taxi drivers may get something in return for getting the girls customers, they are not pimps in the true sense. They do not force these girls against their will nor do they go out and solicit for these girls except in one or two cases. In fact, some of the drivers act as a go-between only to help out their fares who may want a girl or to help out these girls most of whom are truly in need of money. The taxi passengers are sometimes charged double the rate when they are helped out in this kind while some taxi drivers have a fixed rate of something like Rs 500 from their fares to help them contact such girls.
The paper said in the investigation conducted on these co-called call girls, it was found that the majority of them do not want to go professional and are willing to consort with customers only when lack of money force them to do so. When they are flushed with funds, they refuse to sell themselves and would go without customers for one to two months, depending on how far the money carries them.
While mobile phones may be the main force behind these young girls selling themselves, the paper said the investigation also revealed that some of the girls use up most of their cash for make-up and dresses. With the sense of fashion so high in Mizo youth now-a-days, keeping up with the current trend needs a lot of money and lack of jobs and earning opportunities had forced some of these girls to take up prostitution occasionally. As a result of this, it was very difficult to give the exact number of these kinds of occasional call-girls, the paper said, putting, however, the number at between 100 and 150 at least.
