True, half-true and totally outrageous north east recipes ! (May be gross!)
The rest of India have a notion that we eat really weird stuff in the North East and that is true to a large extent relatively. Coming from a state where we eat ‘anything that moves’, and others that don’t, I think its time to pay tribute to what we’ve heard other people say about the food we eat back home, and what we are supposedly eating, the common and not so common, true, half-true and extremely disgusting recipe myths!
1. In Mizoram, the larvae of bees is a delicacy. The hive is burnt down and the adult bees are removed. The remains of the hive with the ‘baby bees’ are boiled and had as a side dish ! This is true ‘cos my mom loves it, although she’s allergic!
2. (Not for the Squeamish!)
My friends from Meghalaya have another type of larvae-delicacy. Pork is wrapped in some leaves and left to rot till a multitude of larvae emerges from the flesh. Then they wait for them to eat each other after there is no more flesh to eat. The last ‘guy’, or Survivor (which can grow to about a feet or so) is made traditionally as a dish ! I have no proof of this and this may be a Half-truth, but imagine.. what creativity !! Lol!
