Dimapur, April 17, 2009: In a yet another most loathsome act of abomination, a six-year old girl – said to be hailing from Jalukie in Nagaland – was raped and then murdered at Mahipalpur, New Delhi today. Rape and murder has been confirmed, a north-east social organization has informed quoting police sources in Delhi. Quoting sources from the Vasant Kunj Police station, the North East Support Center & Helpline said a “suspect man” living in the same building where the girl was found, has been arrested while another, a Nepali boy is absconding.

Samuel P. Huntington, in his work “Clash of Civilizations” argues that most of the nation conflicts has been due to cultural issues. (Samuel P. Huntington, 1993 )
This argument is relevant when North East belong to India in postcolonial Geo-political sense but hardly in a cultural sense. Recent media report show that sexual harassment, stereotypes and so-called “eve-teasing” on North East women are common in Delhi. Many North East women suffered sexual abuse at the hands of mainstream menfolk which is very common in public place. Such discrimination is mainly based on racial and cultural difference.
Mainstream patriarchal stereotype is oppressive because it tells North East women how to behave or how to dress according mainstream Hindu patriarchal norms. The stereotype is dangerous because it is used against other minority groups to silence claims of inequality. And finally, the stereotype is dangerous because some North East women may use the stereotype to judge their self-worth. Except few media persons (eg. Kalpana Sharma) mainstreams feminist show nothing to change this situation.

well said epistemology.
the problem is that mainstream indian feminism adheres to well defined boundaries as set by the mainstream some of which do not include scope for NE feminism (whatever this is). in addition a mainstream feminist also has intersecting interests of other prejudices and cultural norms and traits which sometimes do not include much scope of acceptance for the feminist requirements of other cultures from the margins.
After all there are too many definitions of feminism defined and set as required by the particular society or culture
