In Aizawl alone there are over sixty thousand people living in Mizoram version of slum areas till date. In Mizoram they are officially called ‘slum pockets’ coined by the state government of Mizoram in the year 2006 to identify them so that special attention can be given to these ‘slum pockets’. The latest figure shows that the rich-poor gap is fast widening in spite of the numerous flagship programmes implemented by the past and present governments.
In Aizawl alone there are 66, 618 people living in slum pockets, out of these 4447 are Below Poverty Line (BPL) families with their monthly income ranging from Rs. 2500 to Rs. 3000. The slum pockets in Aizawl also housed 705 illiterate persons, 391 mentally ill persons and 323 people with physically handicapped. To add more grief, widow-families in the areas have been counted as 2195.
