Since the inception of Misual.com Mizos from all over the world have visited the website and we have grown from a simple news aggregator to one where people have contributed several thought provoking articles . We have extensively discussed the state of the Mizo society ranging from the effects of prohibition to our famous Cheraw dance. We have misual.commers (what we call the members of the site) who have an extensive knowledge of Mizo society who also provide interesting and informative facts via their comments . It is a source of great learning for everyone.
Due to the popularity of this website we have had people who don’t understand Mizo (but are interested learning more about Mizos and the Mizo culture) visiting the site who would very much like to be able to read the articles in English. Hence the idea of translating some of the articles into Mizo was thought up by Baruk who is a misual.commer himself and an avid blogger.
He wrote to us asking us if we could come with a system where we could ask people to translate articles on misual.com via some kind of website interface. We said that we would but since we are extremely lazy people we sat on it for weeks and weeks but he (and his aides) pressurized us enough to get things moving. That’s why we now have this page where we can discuss the translation of some of misual.com’s articles into English. We chalked up a rough blueprint of how it would work.
1. Baruk (or anyone else who’s interested) scrubs the misual.com archive and picks up an article that he or she would like translated into English.
2. Baruk (or anyone else who’s interested) will post the article(s) that he’d like to have translated in this post.
3. We then request for volunteers who can spare some time in translating these articles.
4. Once translated Baruk will take over and he suggested that he’d republish them on a blog which can be then circulated among other netizens
Sounds simple enough in theory so we request everyone to join in and take part. I’m pretty sure it can be a good learning process for the translator as well. So here’s to the success of The Translation Project!

Hey, this is a really good idea! But of course a lot depends on the visitors of this site too – do we want to remain in our comfort zones and build a wall around us, or do we want to announce to the whole world who the Mizos are? I think the visitors of this site are matured enough to choose the right decision.

This “project” makes a lot of sense to me… at one end we complain that Indians or other people do not know anything about us and we cry foul that they ignore us, while at the same time we make no attempt for the “other-side” to learn about us.

The accomplishment of this project is much appreciated. There may be willingness or interest but sweat may not. Count me out, I prefer to cling onto my style and language. But you have my blessing.

This idea does not make sense to me NOT because
a) The name of the project sounds hollow. I started reading the post thinking that mi(sual).com was diversifying its activity into something as great as what Google did with their ‘Language Tools’ or may be Yahoo’s Babel Fish.
b) There is dearth of good and universal reading materials in mi(sual).com.
But because:
1. During the last one year, one has not come across any such posts/comments demanding translated versions of the articles posted in the website.
2. In my opinion (well, I could be wrong) most of the posts (and they make very good readings) may not be cherished in equal enthusiasm by the readers in their translated versions.
3. Some of the posts share deep concern for issues that ail our society mainly for constructive purposes. They may not make good reading to others. Such posts are often best left alone for the consumption of native readers alone.
4.I believe that many of the good posts will loose their sting or flavour in their translated versions.
5. Very often, there is a tendency among some of us to make fun of English language in general which, I am afraid may not go well with non-mizo readers.
6. Let us all remember that internet is such a powerful tool for disseminating information but is equally destructive if it not use with care.
But, I would rather have a section in English where posts in English are welcome. This,I believe, will go a long way in your selfless efforts in serving the mizos all over the world and also to those who wish to enjoy the website but do not understand mizo language.
