A doctor friend who is working in Aizawl, the other day told me the alarming increases of diseases like cancer, diabetes and lifestyle related diseases among the Mizos. He attributed this spurt of such cases to ‘excess’ consumption of meat particularly pork and our sedentary lifestyle. According to him, as we MIzos become prosperous or well-off, we care two hoots about our health and take to drinking, smoking and eating meat. No Mizo however poor he may be, can never think of entertaining a guest without meat.

This brief conversation i had with this doctor reminded me of an article i read in a Scottish newspaper, Scotsman News several years ago. The article based on a study in Scotland has found that Scottish people are drinking themselves to death at a faster rate than people anywhere else in Western Europe. The study shows that the rise in Scots death by drink rate has had the fastest rise in Europe. Scottish men are twice likely to die from liver cirrhosis(one of the worse side-effects of excessive alcohol) than in 1991 because of the folowing three factors: (1) increased affordability: (2) binge drinking, and (3) increased accessibility.
