It is believed it helps babies in feeding and bonding and introducing them to their new environment. This usually isn’t possible when babies are premature and have to be kept and nurtured in an incubator.
Yet, medical research shows that hugging a baby can restore its temperature faster than a hi-tech incubator. Researchers claim that skin-to-skin ‘kangaroo care’ is the most natural way to help protect a baby from hypothermia. And babies who are born prematurely are likely to have a lower core body temperature. By merely holding the baby close to her skin, a mother can pass on body heat to help increase the baby’s body temperature.
The Karolinska Institute in Stockholm published research in The Lancet which found that after four hours, 90 percent of babies who received kangaroo care regained normal body temperature, compared to 60 percent placed in incubators. There’s a lower risk of overheating because any excess heat is passed on to the mother.
