E-Pao: Mary blames Mizoram press for the mess
Olympic Bronze medalist MC Mary Kom burst into tears in front of State media while clarifying over her alleged inflammatory comment of ‘never receiving any support from local media’ at a press conference here today.
Mary Kom vehemently denied having said anything about being discriminated by state media during the press conference at Aizawl yesterday after a felicitation programme and charged Mizoram press for misquoting her and creating anger among media fraternity in her home state.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club today, Mary Kom said that she would consult her legal experts for taking up necessary actions against Mizoram media for misquoting her

It may be mentioned that the press conference held at Aijal Club yesterday was well attended by journalists and media reports in many papers have been uniform in publishing her statements which had implicated the State media. She had spoken in Mizo dialect at the said conference.
The pugilist broke into tears while clarifying her stance to mediapersons at a press conference held at Manipur Press Club this evening. She was joined by her personal secretary, also her husband at the mentioned press meet and they both denied the said reports.
Post the meeting and at a highly charged press conference, reporters also asked clarification from her regarding the Mizoram episode. Journalists also questioned her of what was lacking from the State media side so that the gaps if evident, would be addressed in future.
It was stated by the journalists, some who were clearly offended that her appeal to the State Government of demanding double promotion and every major bout she attended was given due coverage. Some even mentioned that she is the only sportsperson who has been featured in the front page the most number of times rather than the sports backpage. Kom could not clarify the questions from the journalists but swore and wept that she has been wrongly quoted by the Mizo scribes.

Discrimination can kill a sportsperson’s soul: Mary Kom
Replying to questions, Mary Kom rued being virtually blacked-out by the press in her home state, Manipur, almost throughout her career and being totally ignored even after winning the Olympic bronze medal.
“Even after I won the bronze while every national media representatives spoke to me, wrote about my feat, but I failed to get a single call from the press in my own state,” she said.
“I expected my home state press to share my greatest moment with me, but sadly they did not come forward,” she regretted.
At the time other states were felicitating their winners with crores, the chief minister of Manipur offered her a cash award of Rs 50 lakh just after she won the medal, which later on was raised to Rs. 75 lakh, she said.
She was also critical of the role played by community favoritism which almost took away her chance of entering the Olympic games when another boxer, L Sarita Devi, was chosen despite not making the mark.
“I sought a re-trial which clinched it for me,” she said. “I had no one to support me as I was the only tribal in a basket full of others of the majority community,” she said.
Calling Mizoram her ‘second home’, Mary Kom conducted the press conference in Mizo language.
