Aizawl July 29: In a press conference held in Silchar this evening by the Barak Valley People’s Forum, the media were informed of the need to have lasting harmony between the people of Barak Valley and the Mizos and that the press can play a vital role in this.

Talking to this newspaper over the telephone this evening, senior advocate and president of the Barak Valley People’s Forum A. Bulbul said they had wanted journalists from Mizoram to attend the press conference too and were disappointed that no one from Mizoram had come.

“We had informed the Mizoram liaison officer of our intended press conference and had expressed our desire that members the journalist community in Mizoram attend this press conference. However, it appears that he had been very busy with official work and had found no time to give this information to the press in Mizoram,” Bulbul said.

He said the press conference was mainly to impress on the media to have lasting peace between the people of Mizoram and the Barak Valley since they cannot live without each other and that the media can play a vital role in this.

“Peace is needed between the two states because disharmony is not at all in the interest of people of these two states,” Bulbul said.

He said acts of criminals should not be blown out of proportions by both sides because anyone can become a victim of criminals. He made it a point to mention that Bagha and Dholai in Cachar district were full of miscreants who take over these two villages by night and that no one is safe. He said the people of Mizoram should not be over-confident when night comes in these villages.

“There is no dearth of anti-socials on Dholai-Bagha area and these people come out at night. So it is best to take precautions when night comes in these two villages,” Bulbul warned.

He said his organization had also sent an appeal letter to the Cachar deputy commissioner to take initiatives for discussions between the two communities to restore confidence and faith and that he hoped these discussions can take place because lasting peace is what is needed between the two states.
