| “When bamboo flowers, famine death and destruction will soon follow,” or so goes the tribal saying in northeast India, a region on the verge of a massive cyclical flowering. In the premiere one-hour special WHEN THE BAMBOO FLOWERS, Animal Planet takes an in-depth look at this unusual event. Normally a vital and versatile plant for villagers in northeast India, bamboo sets off cycles of famine and plague once every 48 years – a rare, yet ruinous occurrence for the local human population. For rats, however, it’s a feast for the ages – a colossal feeding that has beset the region for centuries leaving thousands of ravenous rats and widespread human deprivation in its wake. Featuring exclusive footage and interviews, this Animal Planet special premieres 19 November at 2100 (SIN/HK) and encores the next day at 2300.
