The police have now printed a booklet full of well-meaning advice that should help these men and women blend into Delhi society despite the handicap of their “foreign” features.
What has triggered outraged cries of “social profiling” is that this group is made up solely of people from India’s Northeast.West Delhi police, who issued the booklet titled Security Tips for Northeast Students/Visitors in Delhi last month, are now accused of treating these Indians from the hill states as if they were aliens from Timbucktoo.

I have to agree with Aryan to some extent.That chap has a valid point there.I am a Mizo and have been witness to a lot of racial suppression and hostility towards non Mizos whom we call “vai” in our homeland.I have seen Mizo guys blatantly steal/snatch goods from non Mizos in broad daylight,not to mention racist slurs and our condescending attitude towards them.I remember once when I was coming back from the airport,somewhere on the road near Rangvamual,I saw a Mizo sumo driver assaulting a “Vai” while everyone was just watching by!
Having studied outside Mizoram for almost a decade,I have encountered numerous instances of racial discrimination and hostility in various parts of the country.These non Mizos whom we call Vai have as much disregard for “us tribals” as much as we disregard them at home.People from the North East are stereotyped as being promiscuous,lazy,dumb et al..I shall be honest enough to say that a lot of Mizo students who leave the state for the ostensible purpose of pursuing academics do not do anything much besides party and wear the latest fashion.You might think this is out of context but if we don’t try to do something about this state of decadence we are languishing under,I don’t see much development happening in the near future.
PS:Its ok to cook the bekang,khanghu anywhere we want..That’s our fundamental right..But this discourse should not be limited to the confines of what is being cooked in the kitchens of Mizos or Vais!

Dear ZZ,
Thank you for taking time to read my post and voicing your opinions. However, it is unfortunate that you are unable to comprehend the point I was trying to drive across. First of all, I think you are grossly confusing the terms ‘stereotyping’ and generalizing’. I did not say that North Easterns are promiscuous, lazy, dumb et al.., I said they are being stereotyped as such. The issue of Mizos back home leading immoral lives as you have stated is inconsequential to this discourse. And by mentioning that incident about a Mizo guy assaulting a non Mizo, my intentions were not to generalize the entire Mizo community as racist pigs. And of course, as you have stated, racial discrimination will always exist in this world, but are we to indulge in racist slurs and attacks just because “it will always continue to exist” as you have just said?
Ask yourself if it is right when we impose curfews on other non Mizo communities when a member of our own community gets assaulted, raped, killed etc? Of course, I condemn such atrocious acts of crime and surely such criminals need to be brought to law, but why condemn the entire non Mizo community for the criminal act? Aren’t we guilty of generalizing all of them as criminals, unworthy to live amongst us? Why not look at the crime as being committed by an individual, rather than associating the criminal or the incident with his social/religious community? I can proudly state that we Mizos have strong kinship ties (which are non existent in other communities) and it is commendable that we strongly believe in enforcing and preserving our community solidarity but I do not think it is right and justified when we cross certain limits for achieving this objective.

I’m not too sure about the ‘safety issue’ since I havent really read about the recent incidents.But even if they are made to stay inside their homes,for their ‘own safety’,does that mean there are hoards of Mizo people running amuck trying to bludgeon them to death?Of course,they dont have a choice but to remain inside their homes because they have to suffer the repercussions of the crime they never committed.
PS:I am not being over sympathetic towards other communities to the extent of betraying my own,but I strongly feel that we need to act in a more civilized manner.This issue has bothered me for years and I’m glad I stumbled upon this site for posting my views!

im just plain happy to go through all your comments.at least we guys have that all important nationalism,to be very precise!!
at the same time, what we shoulnt forget is the very true nature of this booklet. this guy, Mr sibu(IPS)is a very down to earth, rrespectable man;respected by all his peers including the vais. his intention can not be doubted but the platform he chose is that of the Home ministry,which is the controversial part. The question is, did he get the sanction of the ministry or just as he said an elderly brother advice?
the point is we are stranger out here!no matter how well we behave or how fine we perform in our works; this should send out a message that we people have so much to learn and understand about our nationmate guys. so, lets be more practical,put down our egos and think about how we are going to mend these thoughts of the vais about us.
and yes, we the mizos are downright racist!!

You said we should learn about them?…we learn a lot about them, isn’t it? what about ‘them’ starting to learn us, they should accept us as we are too a citizen of this land, no matter who we are.

This is not correct at all, we ‘tlangmite’ are racist due to the experiences, it is a counter effect of the experiences from these vais.
In one book, it says that people who are racist are due to the experiences.
Regarding Mr Sibu and his booklet, maybe the true nature of this booklet is trying to help north easterners in the capital and that Mr Sibu maybe a really down to earth IPS who want the good of north easterners, but the approach was not very diplomatic, and as usual media blow out of proportion, which result in such a hue an cry. I personally do not dislike the booklet, i am sure it could be a good start in getting to know north easterners by mainland Indians in the capital, but in my opinion it was a mistake to publish for Police, instead he should have give this booklet to north east students or north east students leaders etc. It would have been more appropriate than publish it for the Delhi Police. Also there is some streak of insensitiveness to mention that north east food are ‘smelly’ and talking about our female clothes, that is another mistake in my opinion, cos an IPS like him, educated with a high rank in Police lack the diplomacy, and a sensitive sense of writing. There are big differences between vais and us, that is also the beauty of this country, but to be profiling us and using some insensitiveness by this kind of publisicing north easterners will not help the situation, instead it increase the gap of ‘us’ and ‘them’.

NE was by accident under India thru British divide and rule policy. It was sad to divide Punjab and Bengal. It takes time to accept the Whiteman as India Ruler that was how Gandhiji and Nehru emerged. Do you call these leader RACIST??? The mainland India should understand and accept US(NE guys) instead of isolating for small and petty reasons. I for one cannot respect the idea of this stupid and coward IPS. He jsut fucked us and isolate us instead of integrating. Why till today it’s so difficult to find the real Indian – who is Indian ….. go a little deeper he will say he is Kerelite, Kanadian, Tamil or Andhrite or Punjabi or Bihari or Dumka even Bengalii Hindu or Muslim and many more… Why?? it appears that nobody is Indian as we all give priority to our own culture and group. So in a land of diversity this branding NEs is really un called for and this IPS should be removed from Govt Service, coz he is really RACIST to me it’s a kind of chicken and egg theory.
