Read “The God Father”: That is the assignment I gave to my niece who’s first year degree student here, under my guardianship.
She’s thru with Chetan Bhagat’s “One night at a Call Center” and “Five Point Someone”. The I gave her “The God Father”. She had to struggle through the first few pages. Eventually she started liking the story and is now past half the book.
Had she remained in Mizoram with her parents, chances are she wouldn’t have read these books.
Any suggestion (book/novel) for a first year student?

The Narnia Chronicles – all 7 of them – by CS Lewis. Apart from the series being based on Christian themes (a good point to impress upon the parents or the spiritually-inclined), they remain among some of the most influential/interesting books I read as a child/teen. Written in the 40s/50s, they start slow but pick up and then one becomes immersed in them….

indeed, it’s my fav hobby apart from watching movies and playing.
christian books- Ravi Zacharias books, Philip Yancey books, Josh Mc Dowell,Sam Kamalesan and others
Novels & others- Jeffrey Archer, Rober Ludlum, Mario Puzo(Godfather,The lost years,Sicilian,etc..) Dominique Lapierre & Larry Collins(Midnight @Bhopal, Freedom @midnight n others), others i don’t remember right now.
Then don’t forget Word Power for english vocubularly and others books to improve ur english.
@Val_brosky and @benjamin … yeah books outside academic is also good, but we mizo esp. have so little time for our academic books and practicals , most of the time we spent chatting, playing football, chaw ei khawm. Thats the reality(trust me i’ve been there), we really have to be mature enough to draw the line somewhere… otherwise as the saying goes “take care to get what you like or you will be forced to like what you get”

In some Degree course, book review is also part of the curriculum. She actually finished the two books and bit of the 3rd before he class actually commenced.
Should they ask her class to do book review, she already got three in hand. Thats where stands. Thanks to me
Goldmember: You’r most welcome. You can also help her wash my clothers, clean my room etc

This is not restricted to student, reading alone. One needs to prioritize tasks in life.

Make her watch the Godfather movies so she can swoon over the very hot Al Pacino…As for books, she might enjoy the ones by Roald Dahl (For those who think his books are only for kids, they keep me entertained even at the age of 21) or Woody Allen’s Collection of Prose which is hilarious and witty.Angela’s Ashes by Frank McCourt is a poignant and humorous biographical memoir which left me in tears and laughter. As for the English classics, there’s my personal favourite:Charles Dicken’s “Great Expectataions”..But othing beats the BIBLE dude..The word of God!That’s something Christians ought to read everyday.

India After Gandhi by Ramachandra Guha recently released… A must for those who want to know our India from “today’s perspective”… Ramachandra is such a good narrator that I haven’t read such an “unboring” politico-historical book… but your cuz may not be interested if she’s a “funky” type… hehe. I suggest this especially for those who want to go for competitive exams and want to grap modern Indian history without a need to struggle under a midnight candle…
