Aizawl, Sept 24: The whole of the Gorkha community rejoiced and marched together as one happy family as soon as Prashant Tamang was crowned Indian Idol late Sunday night in a grand final of the over-two month long talent hunt.
“Words cannot describe the joy he brings to the Gorkha community. We are ecstatic and simply overjoyed,” Tam Lal Lohar, President of the Bharatiya Gorkha Federation, Mizoram Branch, told this paper. “He may not realize it yet but he has done a whole lot for our community which no organization has been able to do for so many years and that is bringing unity and solidarity among the Gorkhas all across the country,” he said.
In a show that gripped the whole of the north-east region of the country, the Gorkha community in the state was doing its part in ensuring that their idol Tamang was crowned the winner of the Indian Idol show against his rival Amit Paul. A large proportion of the over seven crore sms received by the organizers of the talent show came in from the North East with Gorkhas in the state sending more than 10 lakh sms for Tamang over the course of the competition. “We had been voting for Tamang since the start of the competition. Kiran Pokhrel, a PCO owner in Khatla had even opened his shop till late
in the night since Saturday where he gave the phone free of charge for sending votes to Tamang,” he continued. Gorkhas in Khatla were watching the show in a big screen and marched in triumph late in the night after Tamang was declared the winner. Similarly, Gorkhas in Bawngkawn locality also danced in the streets, singing and rooting for Tamang. Sources have reported that Gorkha High School also showed the grand finale on a big screen.
“The reason why we are so overjoyed is that Tamang brings unity and solidarity to our community. When he was crowned the winner, we put aside our castes, our classes and hugged each other as families do when they are happy. It was a moment that is simply indescribable. His being the winner has brought a sudden realization to the country that Gorkhas are true citizens of the state. We have been saying that we are Indians like the rest of you. Now, he has made the country aware of our citizenship through his music,” Tam Lal said.
Answering questions on whether the Gorkhas in the state have made any further plans to celebrate one Gorkha’s sudden rise to stardom, Tam Lal said that they will definitely have a celebration function. “We will call a joint meeting of the Indian Gorkha Federation, Mizoram Gorkha Youth Association and Naya Samaj as soon as possible and discuss our plans for the celebration. Yes, it will definitely happen,” he said.
Prashant Tamang, 24, a constable in the West Bengal Police who hails from Darjeeling was a member of a police band in Kolkata before becoming the new heart throb of millions of TV viewers all over the country.

Gorkhali ho hi a,mizo bulah an inti mizo a vaiho bulah anin tivai lehsia ka ngaisanglo khop mai,Rambuai lai(MNF hunlai) khan Mizo ho sipai bulah an hek nasa thei lutuk,anmahni vangin kan nu leh paten kut an tuar nasat zia kha….

@vatawkbawp, i ngaihdan chu kawng lehlamah chuan a dik viau maithei. Mahse @clliana ngaihdan leh sawi tum i man lo (nge i man lutuk a, i sawi el zawk?) niin ka hria. Keipoh chhan tha tak ka neih avangin Gorkha ho hi ka ngaisang lem lo khawp mai.

Vikings a leh H Vangchhia ngaihdan khi ka tawmpui hihi..i grew up in the land of gorkhas..8 years in a boarding school…they are nice people maybe not all but even the badest people knows what friendship is all abt and thats what I really like abt them.

Gorkha ho hi ka haw hran lem lo, ka ngaisang lo ka ti mai a nia, ka Gorkha hriatchian ho hi ngaihsanawm an awm lo em a. Hnamdangin Mizo ngaihsanawm lem loh tlemte avanga Mizo zawng zawng an ngaisang lo ang deuh hi a ni ber ang chu.
