The following two paragraphs wre taken from Wikipedia entry about Prohibition in the US under the heading “Repeal of Prohibition”.
“Many social problems have been attributed to the Prohibition era. A profitable, often violent, black market for alcohol flourished. Racketeering happened when powerful gangs corrupted law enforcement agencies. Stronger liquor surged in popularity because its potency made it more profitable to smuggle. The cost of enforcing prohibition was high, and the lack of tax revenues on alcohol (some $500 million annually nationwide) affected government coffers. When repeal of prohibition occurred in 1933, organized crime lost nearly all of its black market alcohol profits in most states (states still had the right to enforce their own laws concerning alcohol consumption), because of competition with low-priced alcohol sales at legal liquor stores.
Prohibition had a notable effect on the brewing industry in the United States. When Prohibition ended, only half the breweries that had previously existed reopened. The post-prohibition period saw the introduction of the American lager style of beer, which dominates today. Wine historians also note that Prohibition destroyed what was a fledgling wine industry in the United States. Productive wine quality grape vines were replaced by lower quality vines growing thicker skinned grapes that could be more easily transported. Much of the institutional knowledge was also lost as wine makers either emigrated to other wine producing countries or left the business altogether.”
Remember people, we secular Mizos think quite differently about this and many other subjects from religious minded people.

“In the United States an early wave of movements for state and local prohibition arose out of the intensive religious revivalism of the 1820s and ’30s, which stimulated movements toward perfectionism in human beings, including temperance and the abolition of slavery.
The underlying forces at work to support national prohibition included antipathy to the growth of cities (the presumed scene of most drinking), evangelical Protestant middle-class anti-alien and anti-Roman Catholic sentiment, and rural domination of the state legislatures, without which ratification of the Eighteenth Amendment would have been impossible. ”

Lo tel ve leh hram i la (tlem in a sei deuh hlek na ah) Band sawi khi ka pawm lutuk. Zu hi mi tamtak hi chuan sual ah an ngai lova, kan In thiamloh hi a ni zawk an huat ber chu.
Bakah, thil ka lo hmuh ve mai mai chu, kan “Society” hi mi tam tak chuan “Religion” leh “Law” ai in kan ngai pawimawh zawk. Sociologist tam tak pawn hemi chung chang hi an ziak hnem tawh.
Example chu, tun topic a “zu zuar hlawhtling” tih hi a ni. Kan In bul vela In pakhat chu hlawhtling tak an ni. This is not about gossiping or talking dirt about them. Because it is a common knowledge that everybody in our locality knows about them. Even they know we know, and they don’t care. Because eventually, they roll down to the most important element of every society: Being extremely nice neighbors. They are one of the nicest neighbors I can wish for, always helpful, concerned, and never ever gossiping about others or creating territorial disputes.
Every family near our house has been in Chaltlang from those early days. Chuvangin, veng dang ang bawkin, keini pawh in tih “Chaltlang” bik na kan nei
Chumi In chu, police te pawn an raid zing a, kan veng VC te pawn an raid zing. An raid apiangin an zu man te chu an peih sak ziah a, lock-up ah te pawh hruai an nei nual. Mahse, veng danga zu zuar an man an hnawhchhuah ang mai mai in an hnawtchhuak ve ringawt theilo, achhanchu, hmaaaaaaaan lai atang ve tho a Chaltlang a lo awm nghet tawh an ni.
And they take so much effort to make sure that none of those people who come over there ever create trouble. One of my friends told me that they sell alcohol only to people they know, who won’t go around creating a ruckus. This is true because they refused to sell it to two of my closest Chaltlang friends once (around 4-5 years ago) so I went on their behalf and they immediately gave it to me while expressing “Mama chu zu i lo In ve thin a ni maw??? Ka awi theilo, i thiante ******-a te tan a ni chiang mai!” And they snatched it from me again, and I had to lie real hard that it was for me and me alone. Finally they gave it to me.
Tunah chuan ka hriat ve dan chuan engmah an zuar tawh lova, mahse hlawkna hi chu an nei ve nual… But nobody looks down upon them because they have such a kind heart and friendly character.
Of course I am not naming that place, because I don’t want anyone to use this as a weapon to attack them But those of you who know me, definitely know the place. Let’s just keep it at that.
