One of the most tabooed and controversial debates engulfing Mizoram.. and some of my thoughts on it.. I’ve lost a good friend recently to drugs, (Who in Mizoram havent lost/is losing someone they know and care about!) he was 26 and an engineering graduate. He died alone in his apartment, to be discovered dead a day later. I was overwhelmed with sorrow, to imagine a death like his, lonely, disturbed, in a foreign place. Drugs kill from the inside out, and its simply sad to see our youths succumbing to it, time and again. Had it been alcohol, he would’ve probably got up the next morning with a massive hangover, nothing which a good breakfast wouldn’t cure. May he rest in utmost Peace!
Maybe i’m just searching for someone to blame, or maybe i can’t accept the fact that it was his choice to abuse drugs, but what i thought was, is curbing Alcohol in Mizoram leading to a decrease in the age group of drug users and increasing that of Alcoholics? One can get enough drugs to get high for as low as 50/- while alcohol would require at least 10 times that? The Govt is trying to suppress alcohol, but it flows freely in most of the high class parties organised. Is it only a facade to get more votes from the Law-abiding religious masses? We say we are not “Puitling/Changkang” etc etc enough to handle alcohol. Are we “changkang” enough to handle drugs?
I’m not glorifying alcohol or promoting it, but what I want to know is, would legalizing alcohol in Mizoram decrease the number of drug users and drug-related deaths, not just in the state, but outside the state where majority of our youths seek further education at? After all, the chances of a person dying due to overdose of alcohol is hugely lesser!
Like my mother used to say, Lets legalize alcohol in Mizoram and let all who may, drink themselves to death! At least they would have a chance TO GROW OLDER and possibly, hopefully possibly, sober up enough to realise their mistake and reform!
