First-Ever 4G WiMAX Android Handset & New Clearwire Markets Announced
Headlining 4G WiMAX news this week was the official announcement of Sprint’s much anticipated dual-mode 3G/4G WiMAX handset at the CTIA show in Las Vegas. While the first-ever available 4G handset in the U.S. is a strong selling point by itself, the device also packs an impressive list of features including the industry’s largest 4.3-inch capacitive display with pinch-to-zoom and tactile feedback, an 8.0 mega pixel camera on the back, a 1.3 mega pixel on the front (for video conferencing), HD quality video, support for Adobe Flash, and more. The handset also functions as a portable Wi-Fi hotspot, allowing up to 8 Wi-Fi devices to connect through the handset and leverage its speedy 4G connection. Sprint has yet to announce a release date, but is widely expected to be sometime this summer.
Sprint’s 4G WiMAX partner Clearwire also announced an expanded list of US markets that it plans to launch by the end of 2010 including Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City. Houston, which was previously announced, is expected to launch in the coming weeks.
Although new WiMAX handsets and expanded 4G markets are certainly exciting, what is also interesting is the innovative way that Clearwire plans to leverage both traditional and non-traditional partners to fill capacity on its network. While competing head-to-head against Verizon and AT&T with their enormous install base on a per subscriber basis would be challenging, Clearwire is instead taking the approach of becoming a “network of networks” and leveraging its cable partners, other carriers and non-traditional channels such as retailers, consumer electronics companies, application providers and industry verticals to drive revenue. Successfully taking advantage of these new potential revenue sources will key for Clearwire in meeting its growth objectives for 2010 and beyond.
