The Programme
The Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) aims is to contribute to the preservation of archival material that is in danger of destruction, neglect or physical deterioration world-wide.

The main means by which the Programme achieves this is through the creation of digital or microfilm copies of endangered materials and the relocation of the originals to a safe local archival home.

The Project
Dating from the 1890s, the earliest missionary documents in Mizoram capture the exceptionally rapid transition of a Mizo people fundamentally transformed, from an oral society following traditional animistic religious practices to an overwhelmingly Christian and literate society.

This pioneering EAP pilot project follows the thick webs of ecclesiastical connections in Mizoram to turn up, to survey, and in some cases to digitize, relevant records throughout this historically restricted frontier region of India.

Job Itinerary
Two mobile research positions of three-months duration are available. Researchers will be based initially in source-rich Serkawn, but after exhausting leads in the south, teams will break off from one another, one travelling eastwards towards Champhai, the other making stops along the western border with Bangladesh.

The teams will rendezvous in Aizawl in the north, and, after investigating the prospects in the heavily populated capital, will continue the same process northwards into Kolasib, before meeting back in Aizawl to formulate a final report.

Qualifications
Project Researchers must take their own initiative to instigate connections with people, to locate and list endangered documents and their custodians. Each will be equipped to photograph collections, and will be expected to record detailed notes on standardized lists as they move through the state.

Project Researchers will be responsible for familiarizing themselves with and following EAP Copying Guidelines when taking sample photographs, or when reproducing entire collections. Whenever project leader Prof. Lalzarliana must coordinate from Aizawl, each researcher will give him regular updates as to location, potential leads, and needs.
Project Researchers will contribute to the writing of the project’s final report in early December.

As the project’s methodology involves an exhaustive state-wide survey (even into its ruralmost regions), a hardy, patient, and polite disposition will be necessary. Teams will function as close-knit crews and must work closely together amidst inevitable obstacles.

The initiative of Project Researchers will be key to the success to the project, while the
project in turn offers researchers valuable professional experience in field research, digitization, and the delivery of an academic project of major significance.  Graduates of History programmes are preferred. A passion for the history of the Mizo people is essential.

Compensation
22000 INR/month, which includes a 7000 INR/month salary and a 500 INR/day food stipend. Additional allowances for accommodation and transportation.

Training in digitization will be provided.

START DATE: September 12, 2011
POSITION END DATE: December 12, 2011

How to apply
A detailed resume and cover letter must be received by 4:30 pm on September 4th, 2011 in the office of Joseph Lalzarliana, Assistant Professor, Department of History and Ethnography, Mizoram University.

Applications may also be emailed to josephlzl@yahoo.co.in

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only those selected for interviews will be contacted.
