…for a change.
We’ve heard and seen too many ‘Kan Mizo hmeichhiate,’ ‘State pawn a kan Mizo nulate nungchang,’ ‘Hnamdang mipa leh kan Mizo nula te’ etc..
I share a flat with a close Kannadian girl friend. She’s a church-going Christian and we go everywhere together but when it comes to church, we face a little problem. I don’t mind going to English services but I don’t want to not go to my Mizo church altogether. So we’ve worked this out by alternating between both our churches every Sunday.
Even though she doesn’t understand Mizo, she sings our Mizo songs very well (that is as long as the Kristian Hla Bu is open in front of her). She assures me she loves my Mizo services. ‘It’s peaceful, and everyone sings so well’ she says. But there’s one thing she been asking me about after her first two trips to my Mizo service –
“How do girls in Mizoram look for and find husbands? I’ve seen so many Mizo girls and I’ve never seen one that isn’t pretty (except you! :D). They are so well dressed and presentable, they speak beautifully. When I’m in your church I look around and I find it astounding that every Mizo girl I see is beautiful and attractive in one way or the other in my eyes. But I can’t say the same for your men. (She said a bunch of unflattering stuffs but I won’t repeat it here so as not to unwillingly hurt some overly-sensitive sentiments!:D). I can understand why so many of you are still single” (My friend is of a marriagable age but still single so the only thing on her mind is marriage, like any Indian girl.)
She said she’s met only one Mizo guy who can be called ‘handsome and smart.’ (But don’t forget she hasn’t met any of our misual guys!) “Sangtea is good looking and speaks understandable English, unlike your other guys” she says
And all these coming from someone like her who’s practically ready to worship anything that’s even slightly ‘Mizo.’ She wishes she was born a Mizo.
I’ve always felt uneasy about her being in my church because of the kind of callous and detached manner in which people talk to her when I introduce her. And I have to say it’s mostly the guys. Their ‘hellos’ are gruff, their handshakes are weak. The girls are pretty warm and I never hesitate introducing her to the girls. Conversely, I enjoy going to her church, the people there are so warm I feel completely at home.
I told her we girls fight over the guys back home. We make the first moves, we buy them gifts, we do everything. And the plainer ones like us don’t stand a chance. Which is how I really see it. She refuses to believe it.
And this is not the first time I’ve heard something like this. I’ve heard it many times before, all over the country from all kinds of people. North and south and all the in-betweens!
So what’s up with our guys? They compare us girls with Nagas, other north-eastern girls et al. ‘Who’re more intelligent?’ ‘Who’s got better complexions?’ ‘Who knows how to use make-ups better?’ ‘Who smokes more?’ – And we always fall short. What about them? Why are so many girls dating ‘hnamdangs’? Should we judge them by the same scales they use to judge us? Because if we’re really going to be honest, I doubt if our Mizo guys attract as much attention from the hnamdang opposite sexes as the girls do, vai, sap or other north-easterners.
Anyway, I’m not trying to stir up any debate here…as always. But life would be so much better if we could all try to be less judgmental.Tumah in thinrim loh ka beisei
Anyway, in lo thinrim pawn ka hmu chuang lo ang, am off to Goa for the next 6 days woo whooo!:) And a very happy Diwali to all!
Cheers!

maimawm …beautiful and thought provoking article…but why did you mention that you are leaving for goa as if you are afraid to see comments…….you are very right….but there is something which we need to adjust in mizo society..and with this kind of discussion some ray of light may appear…..
by the way “kannadiga” are consider to be the most modern and broad outlook people in south india. even in terms of voluntary social work , whether working voluntarily for kargil war heroes , earthquake affected people in some other part of the country, in terms of personal volunteer kannadiga always stand first.
otherwise will Mr sangliana IPS (rtd) got himself elected as MP if he contest from tamil nadu or andra pradesh????? ..i wonder….
but still i found Naga/meitei gals more attractive and adjustable than their mizo counterpart…hahhahaha

Yay, a post telling the other side of the story. Kudos Maimawm, you’re telling it like it is, sister
I think most Mizo men are just way too lacking in the manners and etiquette dept, and they take us for granted, and overdo intoxicants….I remember when I was at university and we had these socials and the guys would all get good and drunk and then complain when we girls would all go straight back to the hostel after dinner instead of staying back for the dances. Now who the heck was going to hang around to dance with drunken louts who couldn’t even stand up straight?!
Personally I know a few very well-bred Mizos guys who are an absolute pleasure to be with
Unfortunately they were all at some point or the other, educated outside Mizoram. Maybe it says sth about our educational and social system that churns out such graceless, immature men

Sorry, didn’t bother to check the comments. But spider, nice post.
BTW, the comments to this post just proved how obsessed we mizos are about this “hnamdang” thingy (men, and women included)!

You are so right, maimawm. My friends tend to think all mizo guys are stuck up. The few who carry on a conversation with them are really appreciated tho.
But like Ben said on his post, mizo guys are sort of shy, not exactly shy, but they don’t like to put themselves out by being too friendly. It’s kind of hard to explain, but even when they meet mizo girls for the first time, they do take a little more time than us girls to become more familiar. It’s the girls who have to draw them out. I guess its a guy thing, a Mizo guy thing :p
