Update:
At the same time we know in Mizoram we have a lot of potential of oil and gas. Exploration is going on. We shall be able to start soon and meet the requirement of the Mizoram people. – Chief Minister Zoramthanga
Read here where CM was quoted saying the quoted.
This may be old news, but I just heard it today in church. Our speaker today (Pu C.Ropianga) said we have a lot of oil reserve in Mizoram. (He mentioned this to make some other point, which I have sort of forgotten). The tenders have already been answered and it seems a French company has won the contract. Did a netsearch and came up with this…(link below)
So it could be true. And the results of oil mining on our state’s economy will definitely be interesting.

22-10-06 Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga said that the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has identified a huge oil reserve in a 5000 sq km area in Hortoki.
– Even as a small kid, I heard of “Hortoki has oil” One Geographic student who had go to do M.Plan once said (something like…)that may be the Govt. of India knows it but no exploration done because they want to keep it as a “reserve”.

It seems there may be oil reserves below the territory of Mizoram, but too deep for economical exploitation.

why should they reserve the oil????
the country’s economic growth is eroded by high oil price by at least 1% , so there is no logic in “reserve” theory.
despite so much barking about iran nuclear programme , US and its allies could not do anything against Iran due to the simple reason that , if it invade iran ,the current oil price is going to sky rocketting from $45 a barrel to even $90 a barrel………..cause the work to increase the production capacity in oil field of saudi arabia will take at least two more years to meet global demand!!!!!!!!
Further, what is the quality of oil available in mizoram? another BIG question(even assuming that oil is there), for instance , venezuela oil are different from west asian oil i.e they are called hard oil….even thought china want to import them, but first it have to alter its refineries to utilise venezuela oil.
Lastly, we have a good example in Assam… despite its oil field and Assam oil Tag , what benefit the local people get out of Assam oil field????????? it may contribute a portion of Assamese government Budget hahhahaha

Imports of crude oil are likely to cost about $20 billion this year as against about $16.5 billion in the last financial year. The higher import bill is due to a rise in the international prices and an increase in the quantity of oil purchases.
This is despite a huge effort having been mounted in the last few years to find more sources of oil and gas within the country and also to take a stake in existing oilfields abroad.
this fact also go against the “reserve” theory…….further as far as i know country used to reserve their oil in big tank or some storage device after refining the crude oil…..i have not come across any country trying to “reserve” oil underground ……….once i heard that even crude oil under the ground can migrate to other area depending on pressure…….
so there is no logic in “reserving” the underground oil in mizoram , that too in a state which is bounded by sovereign country in its entire eastern and western side. if there is a oil at all, the only logical reason for non-exploitation may be the non-economy of the cost .

Strategic Petroleum Reserve of America stores about 570 million barrels of crude oil in underground salt caverns at four sites along the Gulf of Mexico

Oil reserves
Oil reserves refer to portions of oil in place (STOOIP) that are recoverable under economic constraints.
Oil in the ground is not a reserve unless it is economically recoverable, since as the oil is extracted, the cost of recovery increases incrementally.

I too have a doubt, even if it was true that there is oil in Mizoram, if we would have any benefit out of it. Sure some small jobs will be available to the locals (canteens, sweepers, cleaners etc)… but that might be it.

Pu zoram an ”We have requested the ONGC to carry out exploration in the state, which would contribute to the development,”. I think its yet another optimistic statement made by him. I like it more better than the chakai farm plan though.
He should have known that even if you are the chief minister of Mizoram, you dont make such request. You need scientific data as well as proper plan and estimation (not like the one in our PWD engineers knows so well) to carry out exploration. And believe me, if there is enough oil and enough money or budget to explore it, ONGC would love to do just that and thats why they are here first of all! If not then, they could have been idling, waiting for our Chief Minister request
