Christmas | Then and Now

December 27th, 2006 7:41 pm by Goldmember

So another Christmas has rolled on by. We may not yet be packing up the decorations ..the mistletoe that we hopefully hung under the door (but the only women that stood under it were your 60 year old aunties.. ).. the plastic xmas trees etc… but essentially the main part of Xmas is over.. (time files by!)

Im sure we’d have had a lot of fun over the last week leading up to Xmas day. Most of us on misual.com are i think in the 15 to 35 years age group.. and the way we celebrated Xmas must have been pretty much along the same lines more or less..

some of us would have gotten drunk and partied on the 24th would have gotten into some friend of a friend’s car and would have driven around the town wishing strangers a merry xmas.. (not that that is a bad thing generally speaking..)

some of us would have gone to church on the 24th and may have have stayed back for ‘zaikhawm’ etc

some would have opted to stay quietly at home and maybe do the ‘arsa kan’ routine at night and sit around the fire/electric heater and have a quiet chat with similar friends talking about past Xmases.
a few of us would have taken the opportunity to zero in on that hot chick/dude on whom you’ve had your eye on since January 1st… and depending on your luck/drunken state of victim/ would have had your chances to ‘score with her/him so for those involved in above activity that could have been fun..

Now all these activities I have described above are what most of us would have done upon reaching some level of adulthood..say once you’ve reached the 16 plus age group .. and its all very good fun.. I myself had a great time helping out at church on the 24th and 25th – i was the head receptionist at our Bangalore Mizo Xmas celebrations :) (more on that if asked for..)

what i noticed amongst the people i hung out with on these days was this constant refrain – “kan tetlai khan a lo nuam ber a nih hi..krismas hi chu” (translation – Xmas was the best when we were kids…);

Do you misual.commers feel the same way? Was Xmas a more enjoyable time when you were kids?

as I was going about my Xmas duties i was observing the kids around me.. they seemed to be carefree and enjoying the festive season – running around and shouting and screaming and showing off their gifts and xmas dresses.. which was basically what we or i did when i was a kid.

back in those days in mizoram we could use fireworks with no restrictions on the night of 24th Dec… (im not sure how it is now but i do recall the YMA/Govt imposing restrictions on usage of fireworks)

so every 24th night i would go to my cousins’ place in Saron veng and i wud be woken up around 1130 and wud rush out to watch the wonderful fireworks show put up by neighbors and then light some of your own and generally have oodles of fun till you were drop dead tired…
then in the morning you would get gifts from your parents or relatives and if you had new clothes to wear you would be all eager to put them on and rush to church to tell all your friends about your new gifts etc..

nowadays Xmas has that ‘been there – done that’ feeling.. you feel a bit jaded over the whole affair of Xmas. yeah you might have fun but its not the carefree unbridled joyous fun you’d have had when you were young…

i am generalising here but i wud assume most of us wud have had happy christmases when we were kids.. however if there are some who feel that the older you get the better your Xmases are then please let us have your views on the topic!

Note: i dont wanna get into the religious connotations of how Christmas should be celebrated cuz that would bring a theological aspect into the discussion which is not what im aiming to to bring in.

I agree completely that Christmastime is best when you’re a kid. You don’t feel any pressure on you to “enjoy” yourself….it just comes naturally whereas as adults you’re under so much pressure to have a good time, you end up feeling stressed out and a bit hollow in the end. I guess the weight of too many expectations bums you out. And it’s why some people have what’s called SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Great post there bro. Although you strike a deep chord with your statement, I think one reason why we think we enjoyed X’mas more when we were kids is because we are now no longer kids (haha! reminds me of a corny fortune cookie line)

The fact is, we had loads of fun then, but when kids of this era have that same fun we went through, we tend to assume that they are not having that much fun as we did, simply because we don’t find what the kids are doing today fun anymore. J would be the right person to explain this behavioral “phenomenon” :-D

Once you have kids living in your own house, you will see what I mean. I played Santa this X’mas to my two nieces, age 4 and 9, sneaking into their room in the middle of the night, and you should see their faces lighting up with excitement and enthusiasm when they woke up the next morning and found their thlang-ra filled with presents and goodies. They definitely had an amazing time.

These kids aren’t going to grow up saying, “Its not fair because you guys had so much fun during your time and we didn’t”. No, to them, the fun that they are going through now is the only fun they know of, and hence is the greatest fun according to them. And, I guess that’s what matters the most in the end, that each of us have the greatest fun and most memorable time during our respective era. Thats the spirit of Christmas.

i enjoy as a grew older……….those things which are “thil thing lutuks” for youth are now a pleasure for me….cause i no longer enjoy joyride and those stuff……..
but look into yourself and do what you like the most……… dont try to find pleasure in where others find ….for teenagers even smoking cigarette outside homes near a bonfire may be pleasure ..but for you it may be a day to day things………
so i did what i like and i enjoy this christmas as i always do………
