AIZOL TIMES –
Aizawl Aug 24: Champhai district Superintendent of Police has closed the Myanmar border from trade following reports that consignments of arms could be coming through to Mizoram from Myanmar.

A source today said the border closure will not affect the import-export of the officially accepted 22 agricultural product items but will affect other items that come in bulk packages which are not easy to check.

The source said bulk items that come in from Myanmar such as blankets are very easy to hide arms in as a result of which these kinds of items which require bulky packing would be prevented from entering the state.

The Champhai SP, F. Lalhuliana has been quoted by the source that some items such as lead batteries, car tyres, machineries etc., would be exempted.

In the meantime, the Champhai Goods Carrier Society has taken exception to the embargo of goods from Champhai and has even accused the SP of going out of his way to cause trouble for them by fabricating a story about an arms shipment coming through, the source said.

Apart from arms, the tip-off the Champhai police has received is that heroin would also try to be smuggled in. In fact, Champhai police seized heroin stored in four penicillin vials at Zokhawthar on Thursday from a 23 year-old woman who identified herself as Zoenmawii of Zuangtui, Aizawl.
