AIZOL TIMES
Aizawl Jan 10: A statement released by the District Agriculture Officer today said the rodent’s proliferation because of bamboo flowering affected 88.79 per cent of paddy which in terms families amounts to 10,090 families affected within Aizawl district.
According to the statement, 104 villages and 7,389 hectares of cultivation was affected which calculated on monetary terms amounted to more than Rs 10 crores.
“The situation for farmers has worsened as we enter the new year but these problems are being resolved as the state government takes necessary steps to address them. At present, compensation to the tune of Rs 100.51 lakhs is ready for disbursement to 1936 families in 38 villages within the district whose crops were affected in 2006,” the statement said.
During the period between October 15 2007 to December 15, 2007, the department had bought 3,14,942 rat tails in a bid to lessen the proliferation of rats and to give the farmers a chance to earn some money.
The batch of rat tails, 2,13,268 numbers, were burnt today at the New Capital Complex here by Dr R. Kapthuama representing the Mizoram Upa Pawl (senior citizens association) in the afternoon.
