St.Thomas School, Khidderpore. Back when Kolkata was still Calcutta, when 1 rupee could buy 12 puchhkas, when GnR and Mr. BIG were the only two bands that mattered, when we all had a crush on VJ Nonie, when we had to depend on the unstable Vayudoot at Tuirial airport to go to Calcutta, or rush immediately to Silchar airport by road if a flight was cancelled.
Remember our Mizo seniors who used to make our life a living hell, but were always quick to protect us whenever there was a Mizo-Manipuri fight? Lolz. u BS-a, u Muanpuia, u Baptista, u Dingliana, u Zarliana. Up against Nilakanta, Manikanta, Jagdish Sinam, Gitgobin Singh, Neelam, Johnson, etc. Our seniors told us the Manipuris were the enemies and we were so young and stupid then to blindly follow their commands. Racist bunch we were!
Remember the first time I ran away from hostel? I remember how nervous I was that day, jumping over the compound wall into the army camp next door. Even though you were my junior, you assured me that the feeling was only there because it was my first experience. I was merely in class 4 then. Now I think I know why I deviated from the path of righteousness in life today… and where that bad influence came from…
I remember how much we used to fight, especially with the Anglos. And yes, I still remember how you used to get your ass kicked by James Jordan, Cameron, Stephen Liu, Jason Presley, Craig Parreira, Solomon from the Andamans etc. and how I had to come and save you every time 
I remember how we both used to go for Hindi tuitions after school. My teacher was Miss Dalbera, yours was Miss Gupta. I think you used to have a crush on her. Or was it with your third language Bengali tutor? Remember how we used compete on who can say those Bengali poetries better? rik tiki tik tik, bhal naki tik tik, ki khabochhe mik mik…
I still remember how you and your brother Chanova used to crap together in the same toilet at the same time, all because we believed our dormitory toilets were haunted, and how you used to wake me up in the middle of the night to accompany you to the toilet because you were afraid to pee alone. Remember Imran who was “possessed” by a ghost? For the next one week, all of us joined our beds together in the night and our matron never scolded us for doing that.
Remember the Babri Masjid Demolition in ’92 which deeply affected us? All the Mizos in the hostel were huddled in an army van and transported to Mizoram House under heavy protection. It was impossible for us not to look at all the dead bodies lying everywhere on the streets. And how we sneaked out of Mizoram House later in search of food to eat, with our hands raised in the air or diving under vehicles every time an army van drove past us? Man, we were so stupid then, especially when the army had shoot-on-sight orders.
Remember Auntie Rich (Junior Dorm), Auntie Halle (Middle Dorm) and Auntie Goodall (Senior Dorm) ? I still remember that night so damn well when Auntie Rich caught me with those “magazines” and kicked me out of the hostel. Now that I reflect upon it, I’m very certain most of those magazines were yours. I have no idea how they ended up in my trunk. 
Speaking of magazines, remember “paperrrrrrrrr man”, the guy who used to come to our hostel and sell Chandamama, Tinkle, Captain Dhruv, Naagarjuna etc? Yeah you used to buy all those sleazy magazines hidden inside his shirt, hence exposing me to a world I’ve never known. 
Remember how a Prefect asked you why you were not wearing a uniform, and you started crying, “My auntie took alllll my trunk”. 
Remember how we got special permission from Vice-principal Mr. Martin and Mizo guardian Mr. Samuel, to rent a VCR for the weekend? I still remember the name of that movie: “Red Beach”. We rented it because it was a war movie, but there was also a lot of nudity in it! That was the last time hostellers were allowed to rent movies. Lolz.
Remember throwing stones at the trees to get those kala jamuns, and how our white hostel uniforms were completely soiled with purple by the end of the day? Remember playing marbles during marble season, spinning top during top season, hitting gulli-danda during gulli season, and flying kites during kite season?
Man, I never had that kind of fun and frolic again after I shifted schools in ’93 because my new school was extremely strict and disciplined unlike STS.
Remember all those girls from our girls’ school we used to write love letters to? I can just remember only Bonnie, Sylvie, Angie, Kimkimi and Tei now. Seriously, St.Thomas really made us mature quick. We were just in class 3-4 and were already experimenting with love, and other stuff.
I really miss those days a lot. And since we have gone out of touch with each other for a long time after I left STS, I still find it hard to believe that you are going to get married next week. Because to me, when I think of you, all I see is that young mischievous ragged kid in dirty shorts running around everywhere with snout oozing out from the nose. Have a wonderful married life brother.

I’ve heard of blood/liquid oozing from the snout but neva heard of this before…..just curious……
