Frank, Politically Incorrect Introduction to Mizoram (for those who want to get the real picture)

Geography:

Mizoram is a remote, tiny province in deep south part of India’s backward region called Northeast. It is surrounded by two of the most backward countries in the world, Bangladesh and Myanmar on the west, south and east, and one of the most backward parts of Assam, the Cachar District in the north. In the north east, the state is bordering Manipur, probably the most lawless state in the country, and in the north west, by Tripura, a backward but fast growing state.

Mizoram used to be green, fertile hilly region but with widespread deforestation, large parts of the state is semi-arid with thin scrubby vegetation. There are no large rivers in the state although during the rainy season, some rivers are swollen with muddy water carrying fertile soil from the hills to eastern Bangladesh and then drains into the Bay of Bengal.

Because of this unfortunate trend, food production in the state is only 51,000 tonnes, which is less than one-third of national average per capita food production. So the state has to import about two-third of food especially rice from other states.

Three decades ago, the rivers yield great amounts and varieties of marine animals mostly fish, crabs, turtles, prawn, shrimps, lobsters and others. But due to bad practice of poisoning and use of explosives, the marine live is rivers have been nearly extinct.

The state also produce insignificant quantities of vegetables and fruits although flower production has been rising.

History, Economy and Government:

Mizoram used to be a collection of semi independent villages but in late 18th century, British India invaded it and made it into part of Assam. Between 1972 and 1986 Mizoram was centrally funded and administered Union Territory. But even after becoming a state, the government could collect taxes and duties less than 5% of it own expenditure. Fortunately, the state was among other backwards parts of India collectively known as “Special Category” which received huge subsidy. The state government received about $800 to $!000 million with little condition from the central government. However, nearly 35% of that ($280 to $350 million) has to be paid for debt repayment and more than that has to to be paid for salaries, vehicles and other expense for over 60,000 state employees. That left tittle for government programmes. Even that have been spent very carelessly due to alleged widespread corruption, delays and inefficiency.

Administration is not exactly Switzerland style. For example, large number of governments (they look more like government MASTERS) are not keen about their duties. They either send non-official substitute with fee much less than their won salaries. In remote villages, government teachers do not even care to send their substitute. Still, no action are taken again such major offences.

Many employees attend office only about 4 to 6 hours, and even during that, they hardly work. They enjoy nearly 25 holidays in a year. The employees are paid salaries three to ten times that of employees in the private sector.

There are only few primary, small industries in the state. Despite attractive potential, there are very few hydo electric power generation in the state, and power cuts are very common except during major events like FIFA World Cup and final matches of English Premier League(EPL).

More than 60% of residents in Mizoram are, or claim to be living under line of poverty (BPL). Accordingly, and because of frequent practice of politicians to promise subsidies for food, electric power, gas and water, most people are not ready to pay market rate for utilities although they have no qualms in buying latest models of mobile phones, music instruments and designer garments at prices well above consumers in other parts of India and Asia pay.

Because of its remoteness, poor infrastructure and lack of fair competition, consumers in Mizoram pay much more for goods, well above, or sometimes double of officially prescribed Maximum Retail Price (MRP). Services are not costly, however due to high unemployment.

Society:

About 85% of residents of Mizoram claim to be Christians although real Christians could be in the region of 250,000 to 400,000. There are estimated 80,000-100,000 Buddhists, 35,000 Muslims and equal number of Hindus. The Christians (real and fake ones) spend large amounts of their time and efforts to look religious bout observers see very little evidence in their lives and relationships with others.

Over 60% of residents in Mizoram live in Aizawl and other major towns. Unemployment is believed to be in the region of 15 to 45%. Such towns unknowingly copy social practice of Bengalis in Assam and West Bengal. So the public areas tend to be very dirty with open sewerage drains emitting foul smells all over the towns. Like Bengalis and Assames living on neighbouring states, the residents consume large volumes of betel leaves guava fruit and inedible lime powder which along with widespread use of DDT (dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane) and long standing practice of eating smoked pork, beef and intestines, liver and other parts of animals, cancer is very common among major ailments. Fortunately, HIV/AIDS affect only about 1% of the population. Since there are no good hospitals in the state, Mizo people in the state spent huge amounts of money for medical treatment in other states.

Mizo people in Mizoram are normally very indulgent about intoxicants and bad food. Alcoholism and substance abuse is widespread although alcohol is nominally banned.  Because of weakness of law enforcement machinery, vigilante groups and other NGOs wield enormous influence. Like other tribal communities Mizo people spend lavishly on funerals and they spent great amounts of time for funerals and other related activities. But they ignore their own hygiene and personal and community health.

Mizos are somewhat racist. They respect white skinned people from the west and tend to look down other Indians and other tribals in the state including their own ethnic cousins. Of late, Mizo people admire Korean culture, including Korean fashion and even used Korean clothes.

..and so it goes.. The Mizo in the olden days are hard working, sincere and tax paying people. every family of Mizo used to pay tax (like, rice, any wild animal hunted etc) to the King. They used to pay tax till under the British rule (till today our sale tax is quite heavy) After Mizoram came under full administration of Indian Govt, they started leaning Corruption from their neighbours and started selling their votes. Just recently maximum number of voters sold their votes for Rs 1 lakh ( unfortunately the buyers of these votes had bought them in credit.. (these guys are realy smart…)
