AIZOL TIMES –

Aizawl, Sept 16: The week long All Mizoram University Sports ended in violence as college students hurled stones at each other at the 8 Assam Rifles Ground on Friday. Sources reported that not less than 10 college students were wounded with one admitted to the hospital.

The fight erupted soon after Govt. Aizawl College won a hard fought 1-0 victory over Govt. Hrangbana College in the football final. Witnesses to the scene reported that students from Aizawl College and Pachhunga University College gathered at the football pitch, rejoicing Aizawl’s win and mocking students of Hrangbana College sitting in the eastern pavilion of the playground.

Infuriated by the mocking chants and songs, Hrangbana College students rushed to the playground and hurled stones at the Aizawl and Pachhunga University students. As there was no security present at the playground, the fight lasted for about 20 minutes. When the police eventually arrived, some students had left with huge cuts on their heads while others were bruised and battered.

Lalsangzuala, SU (Social & Cultural Secretary), HBC, was the worst casualty from the fight and was admitted to the Aizawl Civil Hospital as he had difficulty in breathing and experienced dizziness. Speaking to this paper, Sangzuala said, “I still cannot get out of bed but I am getting much better now.” He also told this paper that he has no hard feelings over any students.

“None of us wanted this to happen. In fact, I was trying to do my best to stop the fight as I felt it my duty to do so as a SU leader. But I was struck from nowhere by a cricket stump and that was the last thing I felt. But I have no hard feelings over any of my fellow students and I do not want this grudge to continue between the colleges,” he continued.

Doctors advised that he takes bed rest for one week as it is still not clear whether he might have internal injury on his head.

Professor AN Rai, chief guest of the closing function of the Mizoram University Sports strongly condemned the violence that erupted between the colleges while it was meant to bring unity among the students of different colleges. R. Zatlaia, Principal of HBC and his staff also ordered all of their students not to present themselves at the prize distribution to prevent any further violence.

One HBC lecturer told the Zozam Times newspaper, a daily vernacular paper that he felt very hurt by the fact that other colleges formed together against his students. “Other colleges had always formed against us in the past and I feel that the officials are also taking sides against us this time,” he fumed, stating that they were unfairly treated at the hockey and cricket events.

Hmangaihzuala, SU, Pachhunga University, however, had a different opinion saying that the HBC students were merely sore losers. “They had two athletes in their colleges who never passed Class XII. We made a complaint against this and they were stripped of two of their gold medals. From then on, they were always looking for trouble with us,” he said.

Meanwhile, F. Lawmkima, MZU Sports Organizing Secretary said that the Mizoram University Sports will definitely be held again next year. “The University Sports had always been a success before and it will not end because of this event. However, security will be much tighter from next year,” he said.

Hrangbana College had always been the overall champion in the previous University Sports but fell two points short from the new overall champions Govt. Aizawl College this year. “Maybe the fact that the football final match was the decider of the overall champion put more fuel to the fire. If the overall champion had been decided a day earlier, the violence might have not erupted,” one HBC student told this paper.

Pick-pockets also took advantage of the mass violence that took place in the playground and managed to grab the money of all the receptionists from the reception room which was unguarded at the time of the fight. No arrests have been made by the police over the fight or the robbery.
