Aizawl Nov 12: Lalngheta Sailo, who retired as the Director General of Police, Mizoram on February 28 this year has come out with a statement saying he did not believe Rev Chanchinmawia’s death to be a suicide.
When contacted about his belief which he had circulated to several newspapers in the form of an article today, Sailo said he had painted a scenario based on his experience as a police officer and taking all the evidence that were available, he could see no way that the clergyman could have killed himself.
Sailo said the pastor, who had recently undergone a heart bye-pass surgery, had a habit of getting up very early in the morning and according to his wife who Sailo said he questioned, would either be praying, reading or walking on his varenda and that his early morning habit would be easy to follow because it fell into a pattern. He also dismissed the rumours that the pastor had suffered mental depression justifying it with the fact that the pastor, on the night before his death, had attended a church service where he was seen to have full mental faculty.
According to the scenario painted by the ex-cop, at least two persons were involved in killing the pastor. These persons would approach the pastor who was on the varenda and while talking to him, one person would have grabbed the man from behind while the other stabbed him on the throat, puncturing his windpipe, thereby preventing any sound from escaping from the dying man’s lips. Then he was stabbed twice near and on his heart and his dead body palced inside the kitchen.
“I have painted this picture based on the stab wounds as described to me by reliable people such as clergymen and other people who saw the body,” Sailo said when asked how he knew what wounds the pastor suffered.
His struggles would be weak because he was recuperating from a major operation but it appears that he did put up a struggle because of the cut wounds seen on other parts from his body, Sailo added.
According to Sailo’s conjecture, the pastor’s assailants in their hurry to get out of the house had placed near the body too many tools that could appear as having been used by him to commit suicide.
“I absolutely do not believe the two kitchen knives and the hammer found by the body to have been used by the pastor’s assailants. They would have been in a tearing hurry to get out of the house before the rest of the household got up and they placed any weapon they could find near the body. After this, they would have strolled out of the house and disappeared,” Sailo said.
Asked how these people could have gone out in the street with blood on them because they would surely have been splattered with the pastor’s blood, Sailo said he was conjecturing the incident to have taken place in the pre-dawn darkness or at least during early dawn when it was only beginning to lighten and that this was based on the pastor’s habit of getting up very early in the morning.
Asked whether he saw the investigating team as completely incompetent, Sailo said this was not so and that it is very difficult to investigate a case where the crime scene has been wiped clear of any evidence. He, however, said he wondered whether the investigating team had followed this line of investigation in the first place. He also said an investigation can reveal what actually happened even if the scene has no evidence of any kind.
